After a brief hiatus, we're back! Extreme heat is an invisible killer—and it’s coming for us all 🌡️ 🥵 In the latest episode of Climate on the Edge, host Susan Su speaks with Anna Bershteyn, the brilliant researcher leading Project HEATWAVE at NYU Langone Health, and one of the few people in the world looking critically at the intersection of climate change and public health, and how to reduce climate-caused mortality We discuss: ✅ Why extreme heat is the "pandemic" of climate change ✅ The staggering evidence gaps that prevent us from acting effectively ✅ Novel solutions, from biomedical interventions to geoengineering ✅ How governments can prioritize resources to save lives Anna’s work bridges public health, climatology, and policy to tackle a crisis that will affect over a billion people this century. This conversation will change the way you think about climate adaptation—and show you why it’s time to act now. 🎧 Listen to the episode here: https://lnkd.in/gNrSsqd6 #ClimateTech #ClimateChange #ExtremeHeat #PublicHealth #Innovation

Tom Quigley of Superorganism dives deep into the resilience of biodiversity and what it means for the future of both nature and humanity. While extinction events have wiped out 50-90% of species in Earth’s history, life has always rebounded in new and unexpected ways. Tom highlights that the real risk is to humans, not biodiversity itself. "I think the odds are zero that we drive biodiversity to zero. It’s far more likely we do a lot of damage to the human species instead." - Tom Quigley, Co-Founder of Superorganism. In a conversation with Susan Su, Tom explores the need for a human-centric approach to conservation—where both people and nature can thrive together. It’s about finding balance, fostering ecosystems, and building a fair, abundant future. Listen to the full conversation where they dive into the intersection of human needs, economic stability, and healthier ecosystems for a thriving planet. We spoke with eight of the world's top carbon removal companies — and XPRIZE Carbon Removal finalists — at the Santander and XPRIZE Carbon Removal Capital Summit last week, and heard both inspiring reasons for hope and surprising areas of concern from Omar Abou-Sayed of Vaulted Deep, Martin Freimüller of Octavia Carbon, Jason Aramburu of Applied Carbon, Tom G. of Vesta, PBC, Axel Reinaud of NetZero, Steve Oldham of Captura, Jim Mann of UNDO and Daniel Hooft of Kelp Blue Check out all our XPRIZE coverage here: https://lnkd.in/gTCzhEjx
At last week’s Carbon Removal Capital Summit, organized by XPRIZE and Santander, I got to speak with 8 incredible carbon removal founders for Climate on the Edge https://lnkd.in/gqmzi3rw Steve Oldham, Co-founder and CEO of Captura and an (exited!) OG in carbon removal shared his views on carbon removal as humanity’s climate Plan B and… on what a potential Plan C could be Omar Abou-Sayed, Co-founder and Chairman of Vaulted Deep talked about his compay’s exciting mission of burying toxic sludge – and carbon – in the ultimate externalities fix Martin Freimüller, Co-founder and CEO of Octavia Carbon talked about geographic comparative advantage for direct air capture, and why renewable energy credits could be undermining DAC’s reputation as a carbon removal pathway Jason Aramburu, Co-founder and CEO of Applied Carbon on revenue resilience within carbon removal, and how broader trends around decentralization are changing the game for the world’s biggest current CDR pathway, biochar Axel Reinaud, Co-founder and CEO of NetZero on why carbon removal prices need to go up, not down, to drive scale across the industry Daniel Hooft, Founder and CEO of Kelp Blue on lessons learned from two decades in oil and gas and the moral imperative behind carbon removal Tom G., Co-founder and CEO of Vesta, PBC talked about double-solving for emissions removal and climate adaptation for coastal erosion and sea level rise Jim Mann, Founder and CEO of UNDO on the role of software in the complex work of carbon removal, and whether or not a carbon removal company could ever “AWS” their tech stack If you’re interested in the true frontier of carbon removal, check out all our XPRIZE Summit interviews and subscribe for future episodes https://lnkd.in/gMg2b6je

Vesta, PBC, is pioneering a solution that doesn’t just remove carbon from the atmosphere—it also protects coastlines from the impacts of climate change. By deploying carbon-removing sand made from olivine, Vesta is turning coastal protection projects into carbon-negative interventions. “Turning them carbon negative and achieving this co-benefit of both protecting coastal communities and coastal habitats from the effects of the climate crisis while addressing the root cause at the same time by doing carbon dioxide removal.” - Tom G., co-founder and CEO of Vesta Combining climate adaptation with mitigation, ensuring our coastlines are protected and our emissions are reduced. 🌊🌍 Explore how Vesta is riding the wave of scalable, nature-based solutions in this full conversation: https://lnkd.in/dggTBkFh

Omar Abou-Sayed, co-founder and Executive Chairman of Vaulted Deep, is leading a revolutionary approach to carbon removal by turning oil and gas technology into a climate solution. Vaulted Deep uses slurry injection technology, originally designed for oil fields, to permanently sequester toxic waste and carbon deep underground. “The technology comes out of the oil and gas sector and it repurposes the geomechanical science behind hydraulic fracturing to allow solids to be deposited back underground for permanent storage.” - Omar Abu Sayed, Vaulted Deep Omar’s unique approach to leveraging existing technologies highlights how the innovations of the past can be repurposed to solve today’s most pressing challenges. In his conversation with Susan Su, he explores the financial and regulatory hurdles facing carbon removal and how Vaulted Deep is setting the standard for high-quality, safe solutions. 🌱 Ready to learn more about this fascinating intersection of waste management and carbon removal? 🌊 Steve Oldham's Captura, is betting on the ocean to help us reverse climate change. With the ocean covering 70% of the planet and already absorbing a significant share of CO2 emissions, it’s clear we have a scalable solution right in front of us. “The ocean is doing that for us. It’s already covering 70 percent of the surface of the planet. And if we can use that effectively, we already have the scale we need.” - Steve Oldham, CEO of Captura. In a fascinating conversation with Susan Su, Steve talks about how Captura leverages the ocean’s natural carbon removal properties, the importance of scalable, low-cost solutions, and why carbon removal is poised to become a global commodity market, just like oil and gas. 🌍🌊 Ready to learn more about how the ocean might just be our best bet to capture climate solutions?
