On Monday, November 18th, Professor Matt Mayhew has the honor of delivering the Eric Dey Memorial Keynote Address at the 2024 University of Michigan Student Life Research Symposium! The significance of this moment extends far beyond the presentation itself. Dr. Eric Dey, for whom this keynote is named, was a pioneer whose impact on higher education continues to resonate today. From his research that informed Supreme Court decisions on affirmative action, to his exemplary leadership at the University of Michigan Division of Student Life, Dr. Dey's legacy embodies the very best of what we strive for in educational research. We will honor Dr. Dey's legacy at the Symposium, and we look forward to keeping him in our hearts as we carry the values he embodied.

Dr. Creamer (CoIL Research Director) presented on effective grant writing. Her presentation was titled “Bridging Funding: Gaps Effective Grant Writing in Student Affairs” and included sharing the processes used to secure the various CoIL research projects. Yun-Han Weng, a third-year PhD student, graduate research associate, and part of the EmPOWERment evaluator team, presented her research at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Traineeship Annual Meeting in Arlington, VA, this week. Her poster was titled "Convergent Graduate Training and EmPOWERment for a Sustainable Energy Future." Abstract The fourth-year evaluation of the EmPOWERment program highlights significant student learning outcomes and benefits, while also identifying several challenges, particularly regarding program requirements and different discipline barriers, including feedback from faculty perspectives. This year, students showed strong evidence of growth during the two-week bootcamps, courses and extra-curricular activities (SCOPE-student community of practice and engagement meetings and JOULE energy seminar). The following Inside Higher Ed article highlights the dynamics in U.S. higher education. Despite personal political leanings, faculty are committed to balancing personal views with academic responsibility. Nearly 80% encourage civic engagement by promoting voting, but only 2% suggest specific candidates. Data was gathered from over 1,100 faculty members: ⏺ 96% plan to vote in the upcoming election ⏺ Most report consciously keeping their political views separate from their teaching ⏺ 78% of participating faculty lean Democratic, showing a significant difference from their student population (57%) ⏺ Only about 1/3 plan to discuss the election in class Professor Matt Mayhew added: Disciplinary context is very important in interpreting such results. He said a large majority of Republican faculty trend toward business or medical schools, where classes don’t center on discussing current political events. Only 63% of the survey respondents from business/law supported Harris/Walz. Please join us in welcoming Renee L. Bowling, Ph.D. as the Worldview Research Director! Dr. Bowling has over 20 years of experience in P-20 educational administration. She was a Porterfield-Dickens Award recipient of the Higher Education Student Affairs doctoral program. Her dissertation titled Approaches to Worldview Diversity Education at Global Liberal Arts Colleges and Universities received the Best Practices in Research and Scholarship Award from NASPA’s International Education Knowledge Community. Within our lab, she will be leading our interfaith efforts specifically overseeing the INSPIRES and InFORM projects. This compliments her research interests which include comparative international education, educational leadership, global learning, and worldview diversity. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Studies from The Ohio State University, a M.A. in Counseling and Human Development from Walsh University, and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Akron. #WelcomeToTheTeam #InterfaithExpert #TeamGrowth #BuckeyeStrong
