About us

We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers who study media coverage of health and social policy issues and the way that media and messaging shape opinions, attitudes, and behaviors in a complex, polarized, and changing information environment. Our focus centers on policies with strong evidence and/or potential to advance health and racial equity. Our research evidence can help health advocates, narrative change organizations, journalists, public health professionals, and community leaders consider the intended and unintended consequences of their communication. Support for this research team is provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The views expressed here do not necessarily reflect the views of the Foundation.

  • 🌟 During #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, we're honored to uplift the work that Quin Mudry Nelson, our PhD research assistant, has done while working with SHADAC. Quin’s latest brief explores the intersections of health policy, identity, and disparities in health care access for American Indian and Alaska Native communities, enriched by their perspective as a two-spirit member of the Oneida Nation. Check out SHADAC's post and read more in their publication linked below!

November is National Native American Heritage Month - a time to listen and learn about American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) history, culture, and experiences. Now published on our site (https://lnkd.in/eAnz4r3m), author Quin Mudry Nelson, MPH (SHADAC's inaugural Health Equity Fellow) has written brief on AIAN people’s history & identity in the context of health policy. Quin's perspective and experience as a two-spirit, Native person who is tribally affiliated with the Oneida Nation combined with their lens on and knowledge of health equity and health policy has culminated in this important brief. Focused on health care and health insurance access among American Indian and Alaska Native people, this publication provides readers with essential context and commentary on United States and American Indian health policy, health disparities, and AIAN identity. Quin’s voice and ideas found in this brief are as intriguing as they are important. Publications with a foundation of personal perspective & experience such as this one are essential for uplifting voices from historically marginalized groups, identifying & spotlighting the structural issues that individuals face, and learning from the stakeholders who are impacted directly and indirectly. Learn more about AIAN health policy and how it has impacted health and AIAN identity in the full brief at the link below. Let this be part of your journey to learn more - the work does not end when Native American Heritage Month does. https://lnkd.in/eAnz4r3m

To expand the conversations on structural racism and health, we need to lead with values and we need to keep it simple. Using jargon or fuzzy language doesn’t bring people closer together to solve issues of equity. We need to use plain language. As M. Allyn Brooks-LaSure shared at BMe’s Next Narrative Summit last month, communications professionals should always strive to be clear, cohesive, and consequential. Tell us how you've used plain language in your work. What has helped you and your organization communicate more directly and clearly?
