Introducing "National STEM Champion" - Jordan Chong from Nevada and our lab! Look at the big smile in Jordan's face - that is what we care about as a mentor, i.e., inspiring students about science and engineering. He will go to DC in March to meet the other 149 winners across the nation. Congratulation, Jordan! We need to wait a couple more month to learn about the cool science he has been doing inside our lab :) We acknowledge the funding support from the U.S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC) through Nevada Center for Water Resiliency (NCWR) for this research.

Big things come in ... big packages! Engineering received an important one on Jan. 17, when the Oxford Instruments Plasma Pro 100 Cobra 300 ICP RIE ALE was delivered to the WPEB doorstep. This machine, a key component of the Nanofabrication Lab in the Davidson Foundation Cleanroom, uses plasma to carve and shape materials at the tiny scale needed to make things like computer chips and advanced technology. Researchers and eventually industry will be able to use this to develop and investigate novel processes for the manufacture of semiconductor, photonic and quantum devices. Stay tuned to learn more! Our Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology etcher arrived at the University of Nevada, Reno! The crate was too big for our doors, so we had to uncrate it outside and cut a bit of the protective wrap to free the wheels to get it safely inside. Although I worked at Oxford for 3 years prior to joining UNR, this is my first experience as an Oxford customer and I've got to say I've been really impressed. The documentation they've sent is incredibly thorough and detailed, the communication has been timely and professional, and even the crating shows an impressive attention to detail. Crating doesn't seem like much, but I've installed a fair number of tools and had to break out a crowbar and hammer more than you'd think...Oxford had everything so thoughtfully laid out and consistent, it left a great first impression.
