Tomorrow kicks off the biggest shopping week of the year: an estimated 183 million people – 55% of Americans – will make a purchase between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday 🤯 Even those of us trying to cut down on buying new stuff still want to take advantage of Black Friday sales. But which brands deserve your money? Commons’ experts have been hard at work evaluating hundreds of brands to see which are really taking measurable steps to drive change in the industry. So this week – cut through the greenwashing. 🔍 Search before you shop! Try it out on web first: https://thecommons.earth/ P.S. We started with fashion brands and we’ll be adding more product categories soon. Request a brand to influence what we evaluate next!

This week, the US voted to deprioritize federal climate policy. A second Trump presidency could cause an extra 4 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions and global climate damages costing over $900 billion (https://lnkd.in/g9ABNZC2). But elections aren’t the only way we create change. Climate action goes beyond the ballot box. If we can't rely on federal policy to address the climate crisis, we must rely on each other. Our collective spending influences over 65% of global emissions. In 2023, the average Commons user lowered their annual carbon footprint by 19%. If every American did that we’d save over 1 billion tons of CO₂e, an impact like taking 80% of cars off the road for a year. We aren't too late. Our choices do matter. In fact, they just became even more important. Now is the time to commit to spending your values. 💚 One call to action this month: pick your favorite climate cause (or one of ours!) and donate as part of our November Collective Challenge. When you do, you’ll earn rewards – and Commons will match the first donations. For our Second Nature episode all about plant-based cheese, we chatted with the incredible vegan chef Miyoko Schinner all about learning to love non-dairy cheese. Here's one of our favorite quotes from the interview: Listen to Second Nature wherever you get your podcasts.

In our most recent episode of Second Nature we chatted with HEATED editor-in-chief Emily Atkin about climate journalism, environmental policy, and the industries fueling the climate crisis. We loved this quote about how climate journalism needs to be upfront with the fact that Big Oil is lying to us. Find Second Nature wherever you listen to podcasts.

There are a lot of factors that go into the decision to have kids. Creeping up on that list is climate change. In the first episode of Second Nature Season 2, we dove into this tough topic with the help of community stories, data, and professional research from Dr. Jade Sasser. Here's one of our favorite insights from our chat — about the overpopulation myth in the climate world. Listen to Second Nature wherever you find your favorite podcasts.

This Black Friday, instead of buying from giant corporations, what if we leaned on our communities instead? At Commons, we’re huge fans of the community-driven circular economy: Yard sales! Buy nothing groups! Clothing swaps! So before we’re inundated with a week of nonstop overconsumption, we figured — Why not help folks connect with their community to snag some secondhand gems? That's how we came up with the Commons Earth Exchange. From Nov 15-17, we’re asking folks around the US (and the world!) to host and attend swaps, sales, and buy-nothing events in their communities. Want to join us? https://lnkd.in/gTXaKeFB
