Workshops Empowerment, Inc., is getting an extreme makeover, improving the Birmingham-based nonprofit inside out. During the fall 2023 grant cycle, the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham awarded Workshops Empowerment a $50,000 grant for external renovations to improve the safety and accessibility of the parking area and entrances and to provide capacity and program improvements, including a mural, a garden center, and additional landscaping. Workshops Empowerment helps people living with disabilities and other barriers to employment reach their vocational potential by providing vocational evaluations, job training/development, job placements, and a variety of support services. Since launching its Mental Health Initiative in 2016, the Community Foundation has become a leader in expanding access to mental health services. One example is the Craig Crisis Care Center, which offers rapid response services to adults facing a mental health crisis. The Foundation provided critical matching funds, advocacy, and planning to help secure $7 million in state funding and open the center in spring 2023. George is the Director of Gift Planning at the Community Foundation, where he is responsible for stewarding professional advisors, working with donors who wish to create a fund or leave an estate gift to the Community Foundation, and drafting and reviewing fund agreements and internal policies. A former estate planning attorney, George loves using his expertise to help donors and advisors make a positive impact in our region. George is a Birmingham native who attended undergrad and law school at Vanderbilt University. He lives in Homewood with his wife Mattie, daughters, 5-year-old Loula and 2-year-old Bea, and very entitled cat Stella. When he is not changing diapers or cheering on the Orange Pumpkins (Loula’s soccer team), George enjoys running and other endurance sports, listening to podcasts, and smoking meats. He hopes to finish a 50-mile trail race this December. George chose to highlight the Jefferson County Greenways Foundation as a nonprofit. The Greenways Foundation resulted from the successful merger of Ruffner Mountain Nature Coalition and the Red Mountain Park Foundation, which the Community Foundation played a key role in. George spends many hours each week trail running at Red Mountain Park and is beyond grateful for our local trails. #cfgbham #staffspotlight
