🌍 Takšna partnerstva krepijo globalne vezi, ustvarjajo nove možnosti in gradijo uspešno prihodnost. Hvaležni smo BSCC za čudovit večer in sodelovanje, ki odpira številne priložnosti! 🙌🏼 — #drustvoVTIS #izslovenijevtujino  #VTIS  #slovencemposvettu

Research fellow in Epidemiology. PhD in Biomedicine, background in Molecular Biology. | Participant in an all-women/female expedition to Antarctica in 2025. | Entrepreneur and volunteer at nonprofit initiatives.

#PPIE 🔵⚪ XUÑO GOES TO ANTARCTICA TO FACE GLOBAL GRAND CHALLENGES Last Saturday, the community association "Sartaxas" (Xuño, Galicia, Spain) organized a community meeting with me. It was a public engagement event to involve my hometown in my participation in the Antarctic expedition, in climate action, and in my science and scientific plans. The event was promoted with support from local voices, including the grassroots environmental platform Noia Limpa and the popular nature communicator Rogelios Santos Queiruga. It had more than 50 attendees of various ages, including some from outside the town and others unknown to me. I structured it in three parts: 1️⃣ In the first part, I talked about my participation in the Homeward Bound Projects expedition to Antarctica. We watched a documentary filmed during the previous Homeward Bound expedition, and I covered topics such as the planetary crisis, climate action, and major global challenges. 2️⃣ After a break to chat and socialize, we moved on to the population health sciences section, where I highlighted the importance of cohorts in advancing biomedical research. 3️⃣ In the third part, I explained the differences between one-way and two-way communication in the context of public participation and involvement in Science and Research, aiming to bring science closer to people, and involve people in science. Participants were then invited to write down their concerns about the future by 2030 that they think Science could contribute to address. They did this on a Galician flag, which I will take on the expedition to discuss these issues with my colleagues. The event concluded with a Q&A session and a call to collective action and commitment to future similar events. I was impressed and moved by the attendance - neighbors who saw me growing up, classmates and slightly younger millennials, young people I saw growing up, kids I didn’t know, family members, the teacher who influenced me the most, and people from outside the community. Their involvement was inspiring. Looking ahead: All of us there are somehow going to Antarctica first. Then, intentionally and steadily, we will represent ourselves in population health research, to generate robust scientific evidence specific to our population, aiming to live longer, healthier lives in our culture. "Adrede, amodiño, xuntos." 📢 From Xuño to Antarctica! "Imos?" Let's go! We are from the land of Ramón Sampedro, we are setting sail "The sea inside"*! 🔗 Link to full text with photos and supporting slides: https://lnkd.in/epiJgn8x #MakingScienceAccessible #MakingScienceWithPeople #IntentionallySteadilyTogether #GaliciaToAntarctica #CoCreatingROSA *Ref: https://lnkd.in/eep7_N-k

Wow, an excellent contribution to the debate on #sovereignty that puts collective concerns like #environmental and #social considerations front and centre! Very grateful to Dr. Cecilia Rikap et al. for this. The recommendations for taming Big Tech are excellent: 🕸️ "Prevent chokepoint and panopticon power in the digital space by regulating forms of control beyond ownership": focus on M&A also in the form of "strategic alliances" and VC money 🔄 "Restrict the monopolisation of intellectual assets, such as data, knowledge, and the control of narratives": think mandatory #access to data and algorithms 💵 "Tax large digital corporations to simultaneously regulate their actions and fund an alternative that expands democratic digital sovereignty": especially instead of handing them increasing amounts of tax money (in education, health, mobility etc) and, my favourite of all: "Recognize that not every technology is desirable." 🤯 In its triviality, this might be the hardest sell to the policy audience. They also propose a coherent approach to rebuild better: by offering a public-led digital #stack, a public-interest #research agenda, a promotion of #ecological internationalism while taking away #surveillance tools from governments. While I am still not a fan of the souvereignty framing, this is probably the very best use of it.

  • Last Thursday, 28th November, we had the honor of hosting the 3rd Annual Meeting of the European Scientific Diasporas in the UK at the Embassy of Portugal in London. . This gathering brought together a vibrant community of researchers, diplomats, and stakeholders to strengthen EU-UK scientific collaboration and foster dialogue among European scientific networks. . Building on the success of previous years, this year’s meeting celebrated the first year of the CONNECTS-UK project, addressed shared challenges, and explored opportunities to enhance science diplomacy and collaboration across borders. . Thank you to all who participated and contributed to the insightful discussions and networking opportunities. Your engagement continues to drive innovation and unity within the European scientific diaspora. . I was delighted to attend the third annual meeting of the European diasporas in the UK, hosted at the the Portuguese Embassy in London and organized by Portuguese Association of Researchers and Students in the UK (PARSUK). This event brought together the European scientific community and diplomatic representatives to: 🔹 Discuss inter-diaspora relations and how to foster stronger connections. 🔹 Identify priorities for the European scientific community in the UK. 🔹 Explore opportunities to reinforce the role of science diplomacy in addressing global challenges. 🔹 Understand how platforms like CONNECTS-UK can enable cross-border collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation. CONNECTS-UK presented its activities after one year of existence, highlighting key milestones: ➡️ Launch Event at Imperial College London ➡️ Networking Event at Coventry University ➡️ Open forum at #Edinburgh on "Democratic backsliding" ➡️ Open forum at #Cardiff on "AI what does it means to society and to you" ➡️ Webinars info ➡️ Report on the Impact of Brexit on Students and Academic Mobility These achievements reflect the power of collective efforts in building stronger scientific networks and promoting cross-border collaborations. Congratulations to the CONNECTS-UK team for these impressive milestones—looking forward to seeing the continued impact of this initiative! It was clear during the meeting that, to fulfill their role effectively, scientific diasporas must develop their own administrative capacity, including: ✔ Legal status to formalize their structure and operations. ✔ Dedicated coordinators to provide operational efficiency. ✔ Active members to ensure dynamic participation and community engagement. ✔ Independent funding sources to guarantee sustainability and autonomy. These elements are key to empowering diasporas to act as effective bridges, fostering collaboration between researchers, institutions, and policymakers while complementing diplomatic efforts. A huge thank you to #PARSUK for organizing this insightful event. Together, we can continue to strengthen the role of science and innovation as drivers of collaboration and progress.
