Day 1: VICTORY FOR RED CLIFFS! 🐢 Today, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service History signed a record of decision to deny the proposed highway through Red Cliffs National Conservation Area in Utah. "Allowing a highway to carve through a Congressionally designated conservation area would have set a dangerous precedent, undermining the very purpose of these protections," said Charlotte Overby, our Vice President of Conservation Field Programs. Right now, every gift through December 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $150,000: https://lnkd.in/d8NfDrCV #12DaysOfConservation #SaveRedCliffs

Last week, our CEO joined some of our staff on Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers about protecting public lands and waters. Highlights included productive discussions with Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto about the Southern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act, which recently passed a crucial Senate subcommittee. We also connected with New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich regarding protection for New Mexico's culturally significant Caja del Rio landscape. These meetings represent our ongoing work to connect local communities with federal decision-makers, ensuring that conservation legislation reflects the needs and values of the people who know these lands best. Through sustained engagement with Congress and community stakeholders, we're working to secure lasting protections for our nation's most valuable public lands and cultural sites. Today, President Joe Biden designated the Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School National Monument in Pennsylvania and announced new actions to preserve Native languages. Today's designation is a long-overdue recognition of the harmful legacy of Indian boarding schools, which the federal government used as a tool of cultural erasure. By recognizing and learning from these historic sites and the stories tied to them, our nation can better address their intergenerational impact and work toward building a more just and inclusive future. This week, we're celebrating the rich history and natural beauty of Steese National Conservation Area in Alaska, which protects over 1.2 million acres of public lands. Designated in 1980, the Steese NCA is home to incredible wildlife, including moose, caribou, and over 200 bird species! 🦌🦅 As the ancestral home of the Dene people, the Steese NCA holds vast cultural and historical significance, with sacred sites deeply valued by Indigenous communities.
