Combined technologies for water, energy and solute recovery from industrial process streams
About us
CORNERSTONE is an EU-funded project with the aim to integrate novel technological and digital developments into the existing industrial wastewater treatment systems for recovery and recycling of freshwater, energy and solutes. The overall objective is to achieve long-term circular economy of EU industry via recycling and reusing resources from industrial water and wastewater streams. Sixteen partners form eight European member states form a multidisciplinary consortium, which includes large enterprises, academia and research & technology organisations. Targeting steel, pulp, paper, and chemical industries, CORNERSTONE aligns with P4Planet's objectives, paving the way for circular processes and EU climate neutrality by 2050. EU funding No 101138504

At the Water Knowledge Europe event on November 10–11 in Brussels, the EU-funded project CORNERSTONE was presented. CORNERSTONE plays a key role in the water sector, contributing to the goals of Processes4Planet Partnership (P4Planet): The transformation of European process industries, making them #circular and achieving overall climate neutrality at the EU level by 2050, thus enhancing their global competitiveness. #P4Planet, a European public-private partnership led by A.SPIRE and the European Commission, supports sustainable approaches across industries. Angels Orduna , Executive Director of A.SPIRE, emphasized: “ASPIRE is an important contribution for the support of circular economy approaches”. CORNERSTONE exemplifies this by driving sustainability across the entire water value chain. Our Representatives from #DECHEMA (Thomas Track) and 20FIFTY Partners (Ken Stockil and Colm Gaskin) participated in the conference and took the opportunity to network, exchange knowledge and experience with key players from the entire water value chain. #WaterKnowledgeEurope #CircularEconomy #ClimateNeutrality #SustainableIndustries #WaterInnovation #EUProjects #ASPIRE #20FIFTYpartners #ClimateAction

Promising progress was observed across all areas of the project. This includes e.g. the development and testing of modules and technology trains using various industrial wastewaters, advancements in the #digitalization of processes, and the development of smart monitoring solutions. Additionally, the work on methodological choices for #sustainability and #circularity assessments were presented, as well as the screening of the current industrial state, including the political and legislative context regarding industrial water efficiency as the foundation for the development of decision support tools. A huge thank you to #AAU for organizing and leading this inspiring session. The collaboration and enthusiasm within the team are truly energizing! We look forward to working together in the coming year. #Innovation #WaterEfficiency #CircularEconomy #Digital #CleanWater #wastewater #watertreatment

CORNERSTONE TEAM visit at HKM site and BFI experimental hall Last week on November 28 the #CORNERSTONE team had the opportunity to visit two sites driving innovation in steelmaking and water reuse: The HKM site (Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH Germany) in Duisburg and the BFI site (VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH) in Düsseldorf. At the HKM site, the team gained valuable insights into #steel production and its water requirements. In CORNERSTONE, the HKM steel-making facilities serve as immediate testing grounds for the innovative technologies including heat exchanger and membrane distillation system powered by the low temperature waste heat. Testing these solutions under real-world conditions with process waters—and with the expert support of BFI—brings us closer to industrial application and the transferability of results. At BFI, we explored their experimental hall and discussed the implementation of upcoming experiments using their state-of-the-art pilot plants. BFI's role in waste heat recovery and its reuse for wastewater treatment is vital. Their expertise in non-clogging heat exchangers and vacuum membrane distillation will help us push boundaries in sustainable resource management. This close collaboration between research and industry is at the heart of CORNERSTONE’s mission to drive #innovation and #sustainability. A huge thank you to HKM and BFI for the very impressive and interesting insights! #vdeh #HKM #steelindustry #waterreuse #heatrecovery #circulareconomy #membranedestillation #heatexchanger Pictures: HKM Site visit, Duisburg

🌍 Transforming #Wastewater into a Valuable #Resource – New Video Out Now! 💧 In Europe, industries are significant water users, consuming around 40% of total water. Yet, wastewater from these processes is often seen as a byproduct rather than an opportunity. The #CORNERSTONE project is challenging this perspective! 🎥 Watch the video and discover how CORNERSTONE is making sustainable water use a reality! Last week, the #CORNERSTONE consortium embarked on an insightful virtual tour hosted by our project partner, #Covestro. The aim of this project case study in the chemical industry is to recover water and chemical energy from highly polluted streams, with a particular focus on the anaerobic treatment of these streams. Various streams from different production sites are being investigated. @COVESTRO hosted the consortium on a tour of several production sites, showcasing various films and images of the facilities and plants. The virtual journey offered a closer look at: 🔹 Miniplant for a new circular process (Leverkusen, Germany): Where plastics are innovatively produced from sugar. CORNERSTONE will utilize #wastewater streams and biomass streams from this process. 🔹 Polyester Site (Meppen, Germany): The Polyester reaction water from this facility is a key focus for our investigations. 🔹 Polyether Polyol (PET) Plant (Chempark Dormagen, Germany): Covestro demonstrated the PET production process, where CORNERSTONE will explore the potential of wastewater recovery. 🔹 TDZ Site (Antwerp, Belgium): This site’s Nitrobenzene/Thermal Pressure Composition (TDZ/TPD) processes provide a unique opportunity for CORNERSTONE to collect and analyze wastewater. We are inspired by Covestro's approaches and look forward to advancing this impactful project together! 💧🌱♻️ #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Innovation #ChemicalIndustry #WaterRecovery #EnergyRecovery #WastewaterTreatment
