About us

Corus International is an ensemble of long-serving, global leaders in international development and humanitarian assistance committed to ending poverty and building healthy communities across Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Africa. Made up of several non-profit and for-profit organizations – Lutheran World Relief, IMA World Health, CGA Technologies, Ground Up Investing, and Farmers Market Brands – the Corus family's global networks expand wide and our local partnerships run deep. Alongside communities and local partners in fragile settings, Corus' dedicated experts across the family of organizations integrate disciplines, approaches and resources to overcome global health challenges, develop productive and stable economies, improve resilience in the face of climate change, and respond to natural disasters and humanitarian crises. With the support of our family's diverse set of partners and funding – from multi- and bilateral institutions and foundations to the private sector and individuals – we invest in solutions that are innovative, scalable, holistic and move the needle towards transformational change. Our dedicated experts around the globe work together to bring life-saving aid and long-term hope to even the most fragile corners of the world and in the most challenging of circumstances. We connect disciplines, approaches and people because we know that the more collaboration we can efficiently achieve, the wider, more systemic impact we can create. It’s belief and action, in harmony.

  • Security concerns and resource shortages in Burkina Faso have caused women's and girls' exposure to gender-based violence (GBV) to surge—1.3 million now require GBV support. In this blog for InterAction's 16 Days series, our Burkina Faso Country Director Kouka Zoungrana describes how Corus International combats GBV in the West African country through promoting social and behavior change communication, women's economic empowerment, and financial access through community-led savings and loans. • ✨ Meet Lakshmi Ram Chaudhary. ✨ Lakshmi is a hardworking father and farmer living in the rural outskirts of Dhanchauri, Nepal. When Lakshmi was five, he contracted Polio. The weakness in his legs caused him to fall into his family’s cooking fire, severely burning and causing nerve damage to his left leg. He has been getting around on crutches ever since. Generations of his family had grown rice, wheat and maize on their farm, but Lakshmi had the ambition to try something new and to add a source of income that better accommodated his mobility needs. Fish farming, or aquaculture, was the answer. When Corus organization Lutheran World Relief launched its Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Development Project in Nepal, Lakshmi joined to receive support to get his aquaculture venture off-the-ground. Through the project, Lakshmi learned how to make fish food, how to care for several types of fish and business skills such as financial literacy and bookkeeping. The project also helped him register his business with the government. In addition to training, he received nets, supplies and 900 fingerling fish to raise. The Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Development Project fostered entrepreneurial skills of young people and women to enhance their economic prospects in Nepal. It focused on three main pillars: 1️⃣ initiating resilient startups or boosting the profitability of existing small and micro enterprises; 2️⃣ creating opportunities for integration into downstream value chain activities through partnerships with private sector firms; and 3️⃣ increasing access to necessary financial services. Check out the video to learn more about Lakshmi and the Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Development Project. #ChampioningDisabilityEquity #IDPD, #InclusionMatters, #DisabilityRights, #EqualOpportunity, #AccessibleWorld, #CelebrateAbilities

  • The intersection of HIV and GBV is a critical public health and social issue. Studies have shown that individuals, particularly women, who are survivors of GBV are at a higher risk of contracting HIV. This is due to several factors including forced or coerced sexual activity, limited ability to negotiate safe sex practices, and the increased likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors as a result of trauma. Conversely, HIV-positive individuals often face an increased risk of experiencing GBV. The stigma and discrimination associated with HIV can lead to emotional, physical, and sexual violence from partners, family members, or community members. This violence can exacerbate the health and psychological challenges faced by HIV survivors, creating a vicious cycle of abuse and health deterioration. Addressing this interconnectedness requires comprehensive strategies that integrate HIV prevention and treatment with GBV prevention and response. This includes providing support services for survivors, educating communities to reduce stigma and discrimination, and implementing policies that protect the rights of individuals affected by both HIV and GBV. Collaborative efforts between health care providers, social services, and legal systems are essential to break this cycle. • Across the Corus family of organizations, we tackle GBV through a comprehensive three-pronged approach: prevention, mitigation and response. We challenge harmful practices through social and behavior change strategies, adopt Do No Harm policies to mitigate GBV risks, and prioritize safety, respect, nondiscrimination and confidentiality in our survivor-centered response. • Pachamanca, which means "Earth pot" in Quechua, is a method of cooking a large meal using heated stones placed in an earthen oven. The tradition is practiced in the remote Andes region of Peru and has its roots in the pre-Colombian Inca empire. 🌎🏔️ Pachamanca is more than preparing food. Through pachamanca, people express their affection, their gratitude, their recognition, and their admiration with one another, according to Jorge Huapaya Solano, a former staff member of Corus organization Lutheran World Relief. In this video, you'll see pachamanca being prepared in the Cocha community of Castrovirreyna, Peru. This wouldn't have been possible a decade ago. Lutheran World Relief has been working in Castrovirreyna and the surrounding communities for the past 15 years to address malnutrition, improve food security and strengthen rural livelihoods. The families of Castrovirreyna used to survive off of potatoes. Now they thrive raising healthy livestock, tending to verdant greenhouse gardens and expanded fields, and selling the surplus they don't consume as part of their nutritious diets. • Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is not only a violation of human rights but also an urgent public health crisis that affects individuals, communities and nations. In this video, Noshaba Zafar, our Senior Technical Advisor for GBV, explains how the Corus family of organizations prevents, mitigates and responds to GBV across the globe. Noshaba sheds light on the importance of gender-responsive programming that is driven by communities and adapted to every context. #16Days #NoExcuse #EndViolence #GBV

  • “Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women." - UN Women This could have been Nasrin. Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. 1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime, and for thousands, it ends with their murder by someone they know. The prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) is why Corus organizations strive to mainstream addressing it into our work with families, communities and governments around the world. As we kick off our 16 Days of Activism against GBV, Nasrin's story is an important reminder that women surviving through GBV are strong but often their hope for escape is inextricably tied to the constraints of gender norms, limited opportunities, and money. That is where a strong support network and economic empowerment can make the difference - as was the case for Nasrin. ⬇️ Watch the video below to see how Nasrin saved her and her daughter's life and then went on to open her own business in Nepal. #16Days #NoExcuse #EndViolence #GBV #Nepal
