  • Today marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Join us as we spotlight powerful initiatives and stories of resilience. In Guatemala, USAID’s Tejiendo Paz program is making a significant impact. Through traditional Maya approaches, 737 survivors of gender-based violence have received personalized care. A prevention campaign in four local languages has reached 70,000 people in the Western Highlands and community-led efforts have established four inter-institutional reporting routes. Together, we can create a world where women and girls live free from violence. #NoExcuse #16Days #EndGBV

  • In Burkina Faso, many families face significant challenges just to obtain essential documents like birth certificates. Through USAID’s Inclusive Governance for Resilience Project, communities are working together with municipal officials to create Roadmaps to Resilience. These plans address local issues, streamline processes and promote inclusive decision-making. This blog from Pam Rosen outlines how these efforts are helping to build stronger, more responsive local governments and improve daily life for citizens. https://lnkd.in/enx7ptif

  • In the Western Highlands village of Aldea Vale, the women of "Alfarería Las Flores" are not only generating income but also preserving their rich tradition of pottery. With support from USAID Guatemala's Tejiendo Paz program, they are passing their craft from generation to generation, ensuring this essential part of their cultural identity thrives. Watch how these women are sustaining their heritage and strengthening their community.

  • 📚🔍 Poor proxies for learning: Why do we rely on them? In many classrooms, activity can be misleading. Visible signs like student engagement and calm environments often don't translate into real learning. 👉 Are engagement and motivation true indicators of learning? 👉 Does an orderly classroom mean effective education? 👉 Can simply covering the curriculum ensure understanding? In this week's Friday Learning Lab from Simon King, discover why we often prefer emotional connections over hard data and how this affects our understanding of effective teaching.

What are poor proxies for learning, and why do we love them?

  • On World Children’s Day, we're reminded that child rights are human rights. Our projects around the world aim to empower young voices and create positive change. From early grade reading initiatives to youth empowerment programs, we’re committed to building a world where every child can thrive. Through USAID’s Bar ama Baro program, we saw the transformative power of education. These students’ enthusiasm for learning reminds us why we do what we do. Let’s continue to work together, listen to children’s needs, and create opportunities for every child to succeed. #WorldChildrensDay

  • 🌍🚻 This #WorldToiletDay let’s not underestimate the vital role of sanitation systems, services and products in upholding dignity for all. In the USAID-supported READ II Education Recovery Activity in Ethiopia, Creative distributed over 147,000 dignity kits, giving adolescent girls access to sanitary materials so they could attend school with confidence. This initiative increased class attendance of adolescent girls and sparked conversations about menstrual hygiene at home and school, breaking barriers. Adequate, safe toilet facilities prevent the spread of pollution, avert deadly diseases and mitigate the risk for women and girls at risk of gender-based violence. Let’s rally together to clean up unsanitary environments in light of climate disasters, conflict and neglect. Let’s flush away inequality by recognizing toilets as critical for school attendance and retention.
