Wow! Look at D.C's ROI for its Early Childhood Educator Pay Equity Fund 👏 👏 23 percent! 👏 👏 Owen Schochet, PhD, MPP & The City University of New York economist Clive Belfield compared the cost of the program — an estimated $54 million in 2023 — with the value of the benefits, including lower absenteeism, lower turnover, improved access to care and better quality care. California's Universal preKindergarten strategy assumes that current preschool teachers will pivot to serve younger children as four-year-olds shift to transitional kindergarten. These teachers have the training, but do they want their jobs to change? Our new snapshot from lead author Anna Powell shows it’s not so simple. Read more about the findings, which are vital for policy conversations about California’s TK strategy—and the future of early care and education in the state. https://lnkd.in/gmzg5qqX

Check out this NPR Here & Now segment about DC's Pay Equity Fund featuring one of Educare DC's Teacher Aides, Boniece Gillis! "Now I'm able to do something I'm really good at, that I'm passionate about, that I love. I'm able to be financially compensated for that. And that's a beautiful thing." Thank you to Andrea Hsu at NPR for covering the Pay Equity Fund!

The need for rights, raises, and respect for early childhood educators continues - excellent op-ed about the ECE workforce in New Mexico.
The good news: New Mexico’s Childcare Assistance (CA) program offers co-pay free child care and has dramatically lowered child poverty. The bad? The teachers in these programs are still earning just $12 an hour average! Jacob Vigil, MSW makes a strong case for why that needs to change, including: 1) "Turnover is higher in child care centers where wages are lower. 2)Turnover disrupts child-teacher relationships, which are crucial to children’s developmental outcomes." https://lnkd.in/g2hT-kbM

Jackie Mader's well-written article - just out today - provides a sobering view of the future of #childcare under Republicans' passion for deregulation. "Nearly a dozen states are trying to roll back some of the measures known to improve quality and keep children safe and thriving," she writes. Another solution to teacher shortages caused by poverty wages? Hire teenagers. They "are really just insulting the work and value of early educators and looking for another group—in this case, younger workers—to exploit and do this work,” says my former Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, UC Berkeley colleague Annie Dade.
