  • Yesterday, we celebrated the end of the year with “Datawheel Conecta,” a gathering that brought together our collaborators, partners, and voices from the technological ecosystem of the Bio Bio Region. It was a moment to reflect on 2024, meet our incredible team, exchange ideas for 2025, and strengthen the foundations for a more robust innovation ecosystem. We were honored to have Gustavo Núñez Acuña, Science, Technology, Knowledge & Innovation Seremi for the Southern Macrozone (Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología, Conocimiento e Innovación), who emphasized the need to create a direct and articulated line to communicate challenges and needs from the tech sector and shared insights on concrete programs from the Ministry of Science, including Chile’s National Artificial Intelligence Policy Update, which emphasizes: 🔹 Talent Development: Preparing the next generation of professionals in AI. 🔹 Infrastructure: Advancing connectivity and high-performance computing. 🔹 Ethics & Governance: Promoting responsible AI focusing on inclusion and data privacy. 🔹 Innovation: Strengthening research and development to position Chile globally. 🔹 Environmental Responsibility: Harnessing AI to tackle climate challenges sustainably. We also heard from Pablo Catalan, Dean of the Engineering Faculty at Universidad de Concepción, who highlighted the importance of valuing and nurturing local talent for international impact. This sentiment resonates deeply with our mission at Datawheel. 🚀 Big news from the event: We officially launched our partnership with the Facultad de Ingeniería Universidad de Concepción. This collaboration will bring a new team member to our Concepción office as an intern and open doors to future opportunities to co-create impactful projects. With over 60 years of history, the UdeC engineering faculty is a vital voice inside the innovation ecosystem for the Bio Bio region, developing talent and leadership that shape the future of tech companies in the country. As we look ahead to 2025, we remain committed to empowering decision-makers by unpacking and disseminating data, strengthening local partnerships, and building a more inclusive and dynamic technological ecosystem in Chile and beyond. Let’s continue working together to shape a brighter, information-based future. 🌟 Ainwater, CASA W - Coworking + Innovación, Asociación de Municipalidades de Chile AMUCH Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología, Conocimiento e Innovación, Gobierno de Chile, Universidad de Concepción #DatawheelConecta #AI #Innovation #Collaboration #BioBioEcosystem

  • 🌍 Did you know that, according to Open Data Watch, publicly available data coverage for countries failed to grow for the first time in six years? The Open Data Inventory (ODIN) is a biennial report that evaluates the availability and openness of official statistics across 192 countries. This report not only highlights gaps in coverage but also serves as a guide for National Statistical Offices (NSOs) to build stronger statistical systems that serve policymakers, journalists, academics, and the public. The latest ODIN report reveals a concerning trend: country coverage scores have stalled for the first time in six years, while openness is improving at a much slower pace than before. Why is it crucial to improve data coverage and availability? 🌱 Improved Policy Design: Evidence-based data is essential for addressing social and economic challenges effectively. 💡 Cost Savings: Open data can unlock substantial savings in the public sector. For example, the European Commission estimates that open data could save up to €14.8 billion annually across Europe. 🤝 Enhanced Collaboration: Open data facilitates stronger partnerships across sectors and borders. 🌍 Climate Change: Environmental statistics are vital for understanding and combating climate change, tracking progress, identifying solutions, and driving sustainable change. To tackle global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and public health, we need to prioritize robust and accessible data systems. When data is open, organized, and easy to navigate, it empowers policymakers, businesses, and communities to make decisions that drive meaningful change. What challenges have you faced when trying to access or use open data? Share your experiences and ideas in the comments 👇 #OpenData #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Innovation #DataVisualization

  • 👨💼 👩💼 Are institutions finally catching up with the rapid growth of data? The European Data Act is the answer from the European Commission. 🇪🇺 With its enforcement started on January 11, 2024, the European Data Act sets the stage for a transformative shift in the European data economy. It establishes clear rules for accessing and using data, aiming to distribute its immense value equitably across society. Here’s what makes it a game-changer: 👥 Empowering Users: Individuals and businesses can now access data generated using IoT-connected devices, fostering transparency and control. 📑 Strengthening Legal Certainty: The Act simplifies data sharing by clarifying permissible uses, safeguarding confidentiality, and protecting businesses from unfair contractual terms. 🏛 Promoting Public Interest: Public sector bodies can access private sector data for specific purposes, unlocking critical insights for societal benefit. 🤝 Boosting Interoperability: It introduces a framework for customers to easily switch between data-processing providers, unlocking potential in the EU cloud market. The European Data Act aims to implement these changes by September 2025, representing a significant step toward a more efficient European data ecosystem, enabling innovation while aiming to safeguard trust. What do you think about this bold new approach to data governance? Let’s discuss. ⬇️ #DataGovernance #EuropeanDataAct #DigitalEconomy #DataInnovation

🇺🇸 Data USA: Bringing America’s Stories to Life Through Data Back in 2014, two teams—Deloitte and Datawheel—came together with an ambitious mission: to tell the stories hidden in America’s public data. We wanted to make U.S. government data accessible, comprehensive, and useful, not just for policymakers or executives but for all citizens eager to explore the story of America and its people. After countless hours with economists, designers, data scientists, and community input, Data USA was born: a platform to make sense of the U.S. in numbers. From day one, our goal was to put the power of information into people’s hands. Imagine knowing the best city for a recent computer science grad or being an executive identifying the next prime location for a new office. Maybe you’re a public health expert eager to explore behavioral health patterns across states or a policymaker looking to boost workforce development in a specific industry. Data USA helps connect these dots. With over 47,000 automated reports, Data USA doesn’t just show data; it brings America’s stories to life. From occupations to places to industries, you can explore the United States’s strengths, its challenges, and its interconnected economy.
