The City Science Summit 2024 has begun! 🎉 This year the network travelled to #Andorra. Among speakers, our director, Prof. Dr. Gesa Ziemer, delivered an inspiring  lightning talk on the power of simplification in urban tech—focusing on how technology can truly serve people. 🚀 Key insights from her talk: - We need to move on from traditional participation and focus on true collaboration and engage at eye level. - Lack of data and data quality is still a major challenge and key to effective solutions. - There is a critical gap in the maintenance of urban technologies, where knowledge and resources are often lacking. - While there are many impressive urban tech solutions, there is too little real impact. - Effective technology solutions involve listening carefully to real needs, developing low-cost technologies, and ensuring that solutions are intuitive and easy to use. What’s happening next? Later, our colleagues Yuming Pan, Mike Hathorn, and Anand Gajaria will deliver workshops on three of our digital tools, developed through projects at UNITAC Hamburg and #CSL Hamburg: - Building & Establishment Automated Mapper (BEAM), developed in and with eThekwini, South Africa, and scaled up to eight capitals in Central America - Digital Job Cards from Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)-funded project Towards climate resilient neighbourhoods and communities in Namibia - Co-modelling practices from the Connected Urban Twins project The City Science Summit is an annual gathering of the City Science Network and other thought leaders in the fields of urban science, planning, computer science, policy and decision-making, social sciences, and rapid urbanisation. 👉 Want to learn more about how these tools are shaping the future of urban spaces? 📌 The 5th plenary meeting of the Horizon Europe DIVINE Project is underway! Our partners have gathered in the beautiful city of Rome, Italy, to embark on crucial discussions encompassing the latest #updates, #milestones achieved over the past months, and collaborative problem-solving to address ongoing #challenges. 💡 Earlier in the morning, we delved into the insightful feedback obtained from the first round of our #pilots which is about to be completed. 🚶♀️ At Layered City, we’re using a citizen-driven approach to tackle #mobility, #accessibility, and #sustainability challenges in urban planning – layer by layer. Based at Vienna University of Technology, we’re collaborating with vulnerable groups represented by AccessAustria and Amazing 15, and expert groups like Community Creates Mobility to tackle the pressing challenges related to mobility and movement. 🌍 Key Milestones: ✅ Conducted 10 city walks with 250+ high school students through WIENXTRA Ehrenamtswoche. ✅ Mapped mobility barriers in Vienna with visually impaired groups, supported by AccessAustria. ✅ Joined the Municipality of Kalamata, Greece in efforts to reimagine a public park using citizen engagement. ✅ Engaged children through #KinderUni Technik 2024, incorporating drawings and games to make participatory mapping fun and meaningful. ✅ Communicated our research at major events like the EU Researchers' Night, Life is Science ✅ Earned recognition by becoming an EU finalist at the EU Sparks for Climate Championship, and incubated at the TU Wien Innovation Incubation Center (i²c).
