I nervously squeezed into the room where they’d suddenly called a company-wide meeting. The bosses had heavy looks on their faces and my heart beat faster with a rising sense of dread. Then I heard it, “redundancy”. My heart sank, a third of us would be going and I knew I’d be out.
It was December 2008 and our boutique headhunting firm had a rough few months due to the start of the global financial crash. We lost massive clients overnight including an Icelandic investment bank, the shock of their collapse made worse by finding out from the news.
So, while redundancies weren't surprising, it was still upsetting. It was my first time. Even though I’d performed well - parachuted into projects that were off track, asked to lead business in new EMEA territories, and got 110% of my bonus. I knew I wouldn’t survive the consultation process.
You see, several months earlier I’d finally made a big decision about my future. Recruitment was only ever temporary while I figured out what I wanted to do.
I’d felt safe to tell my managers my plan, they were so supportive and even helped me prepare for interviews. But I hadn’t landed anything yet in months of applying. In this situation, I’d give me the chop too.
It turned out redundancy was a blessing in disguise. 5 weeks later, I landed a dream role… because I had time to focus, give it my best, and a new found unstoppable determination!
Here’s the thing, there are positives and opportunities in even the worst circumstances. I help people find them, so they can move forward quickly and not get stuck in unhelpful thinking.
