We use the law to advance a bold, vibrant democracy for all people.
About us
Democracy depends on a government that works for all people. Since 2017, Democracy Forward has filed over 650 legal actions and records requests challenging unlawful acts, fought vigorously in court on behalf of those harmed, and notched victories that have improved lives and protected the rule of law. In statehouses, courtrooms, and communities across the country, we still see threats to democracy every day. Democracy Forward is expanding to use new strategies that oppose abuses of power and fight for the promise of democracy on behalf of all Americans.

Tonight, the Center for Taxpayer Rights, Main Street Alliance, Communications Workers of America, and the National Federation of Federal Employees, represented by Democracy Forward, filed an emergency suit challenging Elon Musk’s so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) from unlawfully accessing sensitive taxpayer and business data from the IRS. “Hundreds of millions of Americans across the nation file taxes and provide sensitive, personal information to the IRS, and they do so knowing that Congress has put in place protections to safeguard their data. DOGE is taking a wrecking ball to these protections and harming hardworking Americans and small businesses in the process,” said Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. “DOGE must not be permitted to trample on the American people’s rights and that is why we are honored to represent our clients in this federal court challenge to put a stop to DOGE’s lawless and harmful activities." BREAKING: As a result of the lawsuit filed last night by Democracy Forward on behalf of City of Baltimore and Economic Action Maryland, the Trump-Vance administration agreed not to defund the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) until the case is heard. Read the complaint here: bit.ly/4jXGSjm “The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau protects all Americans from predatory and discriminatory practices. It has returned $20 billion back to the American public, yet again, it is unfortunate we have had to resort to litigation to protect this consumer watchdog,” said Democracy Forward President and CEO Skye Perryman. “We are pleased the government has agreed to keep its hands off the Bureau's funding until the court can hear this case." “Again today, a federal court has had to step in and halt the Trump administration’s coordinated campaign to undermine the will of Congress and isolate America in the world,” said Skye Perryman (she/her), President and CEO of Democracy Forward. This is in response to the case brought by Public Citizen and Democracy Forward on behalf of American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and recently joined by Oxfam. Democracy Forward remains committed to protecting the security of Americans at home and abroad. Read the full statement: bit.ly/3X1wKw2

The American Bar Association has called on "every attorney" to “insist that our government, a government of the people, follow the law.” Democracy Forward is heeding that call and will continue using the courts as the frontline to challenge unlawful actions that threaten the rights and freedoms of people and communities. We encourage all lawyers to join our efforts. Full statement: https://lnkd.in/gs8pFKEt
