Nearly all Catholic School students move on to attend college. Our goal is to educate students in mind, body and spirit. We offer that through solid academics, after-school activities and opportunities to worship and practice the faith. Eric Haley is more than familiar with the legacy of Catholic education in southeast Michigan. Aside from attaining his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University, his entire education came through Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit, attending Sacred Heart Elementary and then Divine Child High School in Dearborn and later obtaining his master’s in educational leadership from Madonna University. The former Divine Child High School principal has served as associate superintendent of the South Region and a portion of the Northwest Region of the Archdiocese of Detroit but now steps into the big role as superintendent of Catholic schools. Haley began his new role in May, succeeding former superintendent Laura Knaus. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to support our schools,” Haley told Detroit Catholic. “I love Catholic education; I believe strongly there is a place for it to walk with our families. For years, the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Catholic High School League have annually honored two Catholic school educators with the Bishop John M. Quinn Teachers of the Year awards. It’s not every year, however, that those awards have been presented by the man in whose honor the recognitions are named. Bishop Quinn, 78, a former Detroit auxiliary bishop and the retired bishop of Winona-Rochester, Minn., served as director of the archdiocese’s education department from 1990 to 2003 and for more than two decades on the faculty of Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Earlier this month, Bishop Quinn — who returned to Detroit after retiring in 2022 — presented the 2024 Teachers of the Year awards in person to Beth Decoster, an English and literature teacher of St. Mary School in Royal Oak, and Marylee Petty, an English teacher at Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights. For the 1,973 graduates of the 23 Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit, the end of their high school careers is a special time to reflect on the graces God has given them throughout their lives. The Class of 2024, in particular, has had a unique high school experience, beginning with the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought with it unprecedented challenges. Nevertheless, this year's class has risen above the obstacles, and with the help of their teachers, friends, families and mentors, is ready to face the world with the help of God's blessings. Each year, Detroit Catholic honors those students who, through hard work and perseverance, set themselves apart as valedictorians, salutatorians and scholars of honor. The Class of 2024 began their high school careers during the COVID-19 pandemic, with their faces covered and being told to keep their distance. When they walked out of high school for the final time this week, their faces were beaming, hand-in-hand with classmates with whom they shared a truly unique experience. This spring, 1,973 students graduated from Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit in 2024 — 584 from archdiocesan-sponsored schools and 1,389 from religious order and independent Catholic high schools. “We are proud of all the graduates of our Catholic high schools and pray that the Catholic formation they received has formed them to continue to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in all their endeavors after high school,” said Laura Knaus, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Once a month throughout the school year, students at Guardian Angels Catholic School add a new international stamp to their passports as they explore the world through the eyes of faith and food from the comfort of the classroom. For the past two years, an increasing number of students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, have had the opportunity to participate in the “Flavors of Faith” club. At this monthly gathering, students learn about one country and get a taste of the culture by sampling traditional food and exploring how faith is celebrated and practiced in that part of the world. “The club is a way to bring our community closer together by learning about the diverse culture that we have here at Guardian Angels,” Erika Smithson, a fourth-grade teacher at Guardian Angels who runs the club, told Detroit Catholic. “We also learn about our faith and how we celebrate different aspects of the faith throughout the church year.
