On Safer Internet Day, and every day, Discord is committed to making the internet as a whole a better, safer place. We’re proud to provide additional tools for our users to make informed choices about their online experiences, and to come together with others in the industry to invest in safety features. Today, we’re announcing that Discord is a founding partner of ROOST.tools, a new cross-industry non-profit foundation that addresses a critical gap in child safety and digital safety by providing free, open-source safety tools to organizations of all sizes. This will alleviate the need for organizations to reinvent the wheel in building tools that already exist, empowering them to focus on growing their platforms or services while also protecting their online users. Other founding partners include OpenAI, Google, Roblox, Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP, Knight Foundation, AI Collaborative, The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, and Project Liberty. "One of the funnest projects I’ve ever worked on here at Discord has been the release of Activities—making it so that developers can build HTML5 JavaScript games and put them right into Discord. Web games aren’t entirely new, but the twist we’re able to put on it that’s a lot of fun is bringing the social structure to that game. Instead of starting a game on your own and playing solo, you can do it with friends. Discord’s mission is to be the best place for players to talk and hang out before, during, and after gaming. Industry research shows playing video games helps people lift their moods, provides them with a healthy outlet, helps them feel happier and helps them navigate difficult times. And in our recently published research (https://lnkd.in/gsj7dt4m), participants indicated that gaming was one of the most important activities for supporting their mental health. We were so pleased to join Safe In Our World this year in their mission to end the stigma around mental health. SIOW hosted their 2024 Mental Health Game Dev Champions, a worldwide event that invited creatives of all ages and backgrounds to participate in a game jam around the theme of mental health. Discord also recognizes the importance of community, so we were thrilled to host a master class on creating and maintaining healthy spaces on Discord.
