Have you ever experienced someone saying one of these phrases to you? Racially insensitive language often is used both unintentionally and intentionally. It can also be used a defence when their previous statements are questioned – ‘I have black friends’ being one example of trying to excuse offensive comments. Ethnically diverse people are often on the receiving end of these hurtful remarks, further enforcing a systemic racism and unconscious bias issue that needs tackling if we are to progress towards racial equality. Therefore, the next time you think of using one of these phrases, think of the impact it will have on those it’s directed towards, and the implications of the phrase itself. Alternatively, when you see someone using one of these phrases educate them as to why their comments are unacceptable. ➡️ To access free resources to tackle race inequality join the REM network: http://ow.ly/FOav50OHIcS #RaceEqualityMatters #ActionDrivesChange Credit: Better Allies

Neurodiversity at work initiatives fail without proper planning. Here's how to avoid missteps: 1) Understand the unique needs of neurodistinct employees This is crucial for creating an inclusive environment. Proper planning ensures their needs are met effectively, efficiently, and equitably. 2) Develop clear goals and objectives for the future state of the organization Without clear goals, efforts can become scattered. Set measurable targets to track progress and success. 3) Train leaders, managers, and staff on modern neurodiversity best practices Education is key to acceptance and support. Well-trained teams can better provide neurodistinct colleagues. 4) Create a supportive infrastructure. This includes assistive technologies and flexible work arrangements. A supportive environment helps neurodiverse employees thrive. 5) Regularly review and adjust the initiatives. Continuous improvement is necessary for long-term success. Feedback from neurodiverse employees can guide these adjustments. Proper planning is the foundation of successful neurodiversity workplace initiatives. Plan well, execute better. What’s one creative strategy you’ve implemented to make your workplace more inclusive for neurodistinct employees? It's been a while (make that never) since I posted something personal here. For those of you who know me well, what I'm about to share isn't new or surprising. For those who are getting to know me, this may help. Here goes…I'm #Autistic. That's right, A.U.T.I.S.T.I.C., AKA #neurodivergent. You're probably thinking, "What!? No way!" or "Yep, I can see that!" Either way, I'm proud to share the fact that I AM autistic and NOT a person WITH autism. I view my condition as a capability, not a disability. An awakening, not an affliction. The first time I publicly wrote about this was in my newly published book. https://amzn.to/4aoL1YV My diagnosis has uncovered several "aha” moments. I'll share a few, but first, I want to thank those of you who have supported me in speaking about my disability, and especially my fellow autistic pal, Isis Fabian - ACC, for encouraging me to post about it here. Little did I know there were other people who were just as comfortable sharing their stories. Shout out to Isis Fabian - ACC for pushing me to share these #NeuroNuggets • I like flags, but not trains. So much so that I memorized them. All of them. Every country in the world (over 200). In less than 30 days. I'm not "gifted.” I am autistic. • I hide or "mask" a lot of thoughts, behaviors, and nuances because I've learned to assimilate into society, which unfortunately is a necessary evil for people with disabilities. Also, because I'm autistic. • There is nothing "wrong with me" because I am not smiling while you are. I am not angry, frustrated, or upset. I am autistic. • I don't have to sit in the same seat every time, all the time. I just feel most comfortable doing so. If I don't, I feel like my skin is crawling. I'm not weird. I am autistic. • I can focus on banging out tasks and drown out screaming toddlers, doorbells, Disney movies on repeat, and other ambient noises. I'm not a robot. I am autistic. • I use timers. Lots of them. All day. They keep me on schedule. I feel most productive when I timebox (look it up) my work. I'm not rigid. I am autistic. • I prefer the long version of everything. Books, papers, articles, documentaries, podcasts, and any other form of learning that I can dig into. I'm not obsessed. I am autistic. • I care about your feelings. I'm just trying to comprehend them before matching my face, head, and heart to whatever emotion you're experiencing simultaneously. I'm not dismissive or incapable of feeling emotion. I am autistic. • I'm not the same as your friend's autistic child. I'm an adult black man. I'm independent. I provide for myself and for my family. I am empathetic. I have emotions. I am listening, even when you think I'm not. I am respectful, even when I am comfortable saying things out loud that you're too uncomfortable to even think about. I am capable. I AM AUTISTIC #IAmAutistic #autism #autismawareness #autismspectrum #NeuroNugget #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #neurodivergence #neuroinclusion

Advocating for Yourself at Work: It’s More Than a Skill—It’s a Necessity. I’m honored to be featured in this powerful MSNBC article about self-advocacy and The Memo Short Film. When I wrote The Memo, I aimed to spark a conversation about the barriers women of color face in the workplace and the tools needed to overcome them. With The Memo Short Film, we’re taking those lessons beyond the page, showcasing real stories that inspire action and empower individuals to speak up for themselves and others. Advocating for yourself isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for your career and well-being. If you’ve ever hesitated to ask for what you deserve or struggled to navigate workplace dynamics, this is for you. 🎥 Check out the MSNBC feature and learn more about the film here: https://lnkd.in/gdRM6KKQ I’d love to hear your thoughts—how have you advocated for yourself at work, and what challenges have you faced along the way? #TheMemo #SelfAdvocacy #KnowYourValue #CareerGrowth

𝗜𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗦𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? Even with a structured interview process, unconscious bias can creep in. Here are 5 powerful strategies to combat groupthink and make truly informed hiring decisions: 1️⃣ Diversify Tools & Perspectives - Combine multiple assessment methods (simulations, dilemmas, behavioral questions) AND multiple interviewer perspectives. Quantitatively aggregated, these outpredict any single tool or viewpoint. 2️⃣ Mix Up Your Panel - Create a diverse interview team across departments, backgrounds, genders, and ethnicities. Different viewpoints expose blind spots. 3️⃣ Independent Evaluations First No under-the-table kicks or immediate post-interview chats! Evaluate separately first, then huddle. This preserves diverse perspectives for a more accurate, efficient assessment. 4️⃣ Information Firewall - Don't forward info between interview stages. Avoid the confirmation bias trap! 5️⃣ Skills Over Collective Impressions Fancy degrees and big-name employers tend to impress everyone, fueling groupthink. Focus on relevant skills to break free from this collective bias. Implementing these strategies can dramatically reduce groupthink, leading to more qualified and diverse hires. What's your experience with groupthink in hiring? Share below! 👇 #informedecisions #interviews #bias
