As Daylight Saving Time (DST) approaches on Sunday, March 9th, businesses face the challenge of adjusting their timekeeping systems to ensure payroll accuracy. The "spring forward" shift means employees will lose an hour of sleep, and companies need to account for that lost hour in scheduling and payroll. Here are a few essential tips to help your business navigate the time change smoothly: 1️⃣ Double-Check Timekeeping Systems Ensure your timekeeping software or clock systems automatically adjust for DST (Dominion Payroll's does 😉). If you use manual entry or traditional punch clocks, review how your system handles the change to avoid payroll discrepancies. 2️⃣ Review Employee Shifts Employees working overnight or late-night shifts are most affected by DST. Be clear on whether they'll be paid for the full shift or if adjustments are needed. 3️⃣ Account for Overtime DST may impact overtime calculations if employees work over 40 hours in the week. Be sure to follow proper procedures for overtime pay and adjust accordingly. 4️⃣ Communicate with Your Team Make sure your employees understand how DST will affect their schedules. Transparency is key to avoid confusion and ensure everyone is on the same page. 5️⃣  Verify Compliance with Local Laws Not all states observe DST. Ensure your business is compliant with the timekeeping requirements of each state to avoid potential issues. Missing an hour of sleep is one thing but missing payroll compliance is another.
