  • The last campaign that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was working on at the time of his death was the Poor People's Campaign, a multiracial campaign to occupy Washington, DC in order to demand economic justice. Although he was assassinated before the action took place, this campaign resulted in 3,000 people set up a protest camp on the National Mall for six weeks. It is no accident that many do not know about this part of his journey. We are facing people at the local, state, and national level who are doing their level best to make sure no one knows this history. Today, we have the opportunity to keep the values that Dr. King fought and died for alive by refusing to forget. We have the opportunity to keep these values alive by continuing to act. This week, we're gearing up to train people from all over the state to develop and run campaigns to improve the lives of poor and working class rural people of all races. We welcome you to RSVP for one of our upcoming events at dhnc.info/GetInvolved Come on in y'all. There's work to do.

  • December - Our staff came together to reflect and learn from all of our hard work during the year. We were also proud to host the Movement Builders Conference led by our national affiliate People's Action. -- So much has happened this year, and it has all happened incredibly fast. As we get ready for 2025, here's a look back at just some of the things Down Homies made happen. Want to work with us & build multiracial, working class, rural power? • November - the results are in! And ballots were cured! And elections were contested and called! All told over 30% of our endorsed candidates won their races and we were able to clinch our two big electoral goals -- defeating Mark Robinson & breaking the supermajority in the NC General Assembly. To accomplish these goals, Down Home ran the largest rural field program in the state. We knocked more than 630,000 doors and collaborated with state and national partners to help complete more than 1.7 million phone calls. After election night was over, we coordinated a ballot curing program across 35 counties and were instrumental in confirming several critical races. No wonder we're tired! -- So much has happened this year, and it has all happened incredibly fast. As we get ready for 2025, here's a look back at just some of the things Down Homies made happen. • August - In collaboration with the NC Council of Churches and the NC Black Alliance as well as faith leaders from all over the state, Down Home NC launched Revival Reimagined. People of faith gathered to stand united against white christian nationalism and commit to expressing faith through action at the polls by voting against candidates who espoused those views. Hundreds of participants heard the call in four events over the course of the summer. -- So much has happened this year, and it has all happened incredibly fast. • July - canvassers began to wrap up pursuasion conversations all over the state and get ready to shift into mobilization mode. Through months of script development and testing by our Deep Canvassing team, we found that conversations about abortion access were among the most effective at persuading rural voters of all political persuasions to shift their vote for governor from Robinson to Stein. Our canvassing teams initiated conversations in rural communities throughout NC about the importance of access to abortion and the fact that Robinson had vowed a total ban if elected. Time and time again, our canvassers found people to be open, receptive, and concerned enough to commit to changing their vote after these meaningful conversations. -- So much has happened this year, and it has all happened incredibly fast.
