Last week, we hosted a series of discussions for the  Boston book launch of #JobMoves. Throughout a lively 90 minutes we heard from Job Moves co-authors Michael Horn and Ethan Bernstein, Duet alumni Janine Pires and Selena Adams, Duet Director of Career Services Angele Maraj, policy expert & AVP in the Education Practice at Jobs for the Future (JFF), Kyle Hartung and Duet COO Michele Dow Carroll. 💡 Here are a few key insights that we’re still talking about in the Duet office: ▪️ For an individual: #Career decisions are about much more than a paycheck or title—they’re rooted in understanding what truly drives us. Janine and Selena shared how they worked with Duet’s career team to intentionally navigate their career journeys with clarity and focus on what really matters to them, a central focus in the book Job Moves. ▪️ For employers: Focusing on retention means moving away from thinking of hiring as a transaction—hiring someone solely to do a job description listed on a piece of paper—and instead consider the deeper skills, and goals that motivate a person to succeed in the role and contribute meaningfully to the organization. ▪️ For policymakers: How can we rethink career progress to reflect the realities of today’s (as we know it) nonlinear career paths? And how do we shift from viewing job seekers as merely economic assets to recognizing their individual goals, skills, and potential? To everyone who joined us, thank you! All, let’s keep the conversation going—what’s your take? 🎓 Why do we expect students to navigate college alone? This insight from Michael Larsson, CEO of Duet, really struck me on a recent episode of Future U Podcast: "Higher ed, for whatever reason, has this idea that it's something you should do by yourself. Even though other hard things where the payoff is down the road, like trying to stay healthy or fit, it's commonplace to have someone help set goals and stay on you." Think about it: We hire personal trainers to help us exercise. We get instructors for music lessons. We have coaches to learn a sports. Yet when it comes to one of life's most significant investments – college – we often leave students to figure it out alone. The data tells a sobering story: ⚠️ 40 million Americans have some college credits but no degree ⚠️ Only 2% of these students ever return to complete their education ⚠️ For those who do return, the average time to complete an associate's degree is 67 months But there's hope as Michael Horn and I heard from Larsson. At first, I was skeptical of models like Duet, but they are showing success by partnering with universities and combining: ✅ Flexible online learning ✅ Affordable tuition ($2,600 per term) ✅ Dedicated personal coaching It's time we flip the script from asking "Are students college-ready?" to "Are we student-ready?" The solution is surprisingly simple: affordability and flexibility. Adult learners don't have the luxury of time or money – they need education that works around their lives, not the other way around. Right before we recorded this episode, I had heard from a Bank of America executive about the state of its workforce: 25% of employees are caring for both children AND parents, with 71% of those with caring responsibilities making under $40k annually. Yet we keep trying to serve all working learners with the same rigid model of higher ed. 🔽 Subscribe to Future U. CEO and Co-Founder at Duet

Appreciated this opportunity to share more about the Duet story with Michael Horn and Jeff Selingo. Michael made a point that resonated with me: colleges need to focus on being STUDENT READY. Proud to partner with Southern New Hampshire University to focus on that work every day.

Affordable and flexible online programs open up access to college for those who couldn’t otherwise attend. That’s potentially a disruptive innovation. But being potentially disruptive is NOT enough if students don’t earn credentials of value. That’s why I’m so excited about coaching models that complement these online programs with robust, often in-person, supports that help more students graduate on time. #Disruptiveinnovation meets real value and a no excuses mindset. Jeff Selingo and I had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Larsson, the founder and CEO of Duet, a nonprofit providing these services in integrated fashion to students at Southern New Hampshire University. You can find the full episode below. Give it a listen and share your thoughts in the comments!
