In her speech, Camp to Campus, Mary Maker recounts her experience living at Kakuma Refugee Camp after fleeing war in southern Sudan. "It was a place where people became numbers, anonymous stories—or worse, untold stories. A never-ending circle of war and conflict." Mary co-founded Elimisha Kakuma to provide access to higher education opportunities for high school graduates living in the Camp. Alongside UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, we're working to ensure that no populations face barriers to education, investing in those that are not able to access testing around the globe. With a supportive community, we can integrate refugees into a network, guide them through the confusion and loneliness of being away from home, and collectively address the barriers they face. This week, we were honored to participate in the Canadian Immigration Summit, hosted by The Conference Board of Canada! 🇨🇦 It was incredible to learn from so many passionate leaders working to advance innovative solutions to strengthen Canada’s immigration system. One of the highlights was the panel organized by Marlene Olsavsky (she/her/hers), in which Lara Dyer (Talent Beyond Boundaries), Michael Casasola (UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency), Ashley Korn (World University Service of Canada (WUSC - EUMC)), and Farhana Roshan (Duolingo x UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Access Scholar) shared their powerful insights on how technology and partnerships are creating new opportunities for refugees to access pathways for work, education, and family reunification. At Duolingo, this work is central to our mission to increase access to quality education and English language testing for all, everywhere. We proudly support refugees through our Duolingo x UNHCR Access Scholars Program, provide 50,000 annual fee waivers for the Duolingo English Test, and offer secure language testing for refugees applying to the Canadian Economic Mobility Pathway Pilot (EMPP). We look forward to continuing our efforts and collaborating on innovative solutions that make a difference in the lives of refugees. #RefugeeEducation #DuolingoEnglishTest #Immigration #GlobalImpact #EducationForAll #Canada
