The San Antonio Mayor's Youth Engagement Council for Climate Initiatives spent a day learning about the important role ecosystems and biodiversity play in our communities. At Confluence Park, Angela Vela from the Indigenous Cultures Institute led a land promise, a water ceremony, and a reflection to deepen our connection to the land and our understanding of environmental justice. We then explored self-development through a character strengths activity, remembering that personal growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Finally, we reflected on the climate resilience topics we've been learning about in preparation for choosing an interesting area to focus our Community Advocacy Projects on. We enjoyed reconnecting with the Louisiana Green Corps, which provides environmental education and career-building opportunities for young adults! Program Manager Shanika Blunt met with the organization to plan how EcoRise can support LAGC high school students to becoming green professionals! We discussed how our Green Building Lessons can deepen knowledge of LEED criteria and prepare students for the certification exam. The Austin Youth Climate Equity Council members had an inspiring visit to Clayton Korte architecture firm, where we explored the intersection of design, sustainability, and public good! 🌟 We learned how the firm renovated Kingsbury Commons at Pease Park and all the stages of collaboration that go into such a large project, especially when the client is the public. We explored the career pathways of many people involved in the project, the concept renderings, and then the finished public space. Council alumni also took the reins, facilitating energizing icebreakers—seeing their leadership in action is incredible!
