Ellipsis is Iowa’s most holistic provider of youth and family support services.

About us

Mission: We help kids and families build healthy relationships so they can write their own story. Ellipsis brings together Youth Homes of Mid-America (YHMA) and Youth Emergency Services & Shelter (YESS), both storied Iowa institutions with long histories of helping kids succeed. As Ellipsis, we create a community where kids and families are valued, hopeful, healthy and together. Our trained and compassionate staff members assess individual needs and create a plan to overcome obstacles. • "People need to understand that we are not working with kids who just need an attitude adjustment or are entitled. They have gone through trauma. It takes patience and understanding to get to the cause of the behavior because the behavior will not change until we address the root of it." — Bobbie Jo Harrings, Ellipsis employee Read more about Bobbie Jo's passion for her work in youth services and help us thank her for all she does. https://lnkd.in/gicwQigW

The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines understands that if basic needs like safe and supportive housing aren’t met, our community cannot thrive the way we want it to. This year, we’re thrilled to prioritize safe and inspiring spaces for girls in central Iowa to stay, a previously underserved group. Thank you to the Community Foundation for awarding us with a Leadership Grant to provide more spaces for girls in group foster care. Read more.

We are delighted to award $310,000 in Leadership Grants to two local nonprofits and their projects. The recipients include Anawim Housing’s Monarch Apartments and Ellipsis – A Place for Girls: Expanding Capacity for Group Foster Care. Please join us in congratulating these amazing organizations! Learn more about the grants and projects here: https://bit.ly/4hmBJzt. Leadership Grants are made possible through generous donors to the Better Together Fund.

  • Who feels loved and inspired to do better when they’re in a sterile environment? Not you and certainly not teens who are working to overcome trauma, learn new skills and determine the next chapter of their story. That’s why we’re embarking on the Hopeful Spaces campaign. • It may be Dry January, but we know teens and families struggle with substance use. In fact, more than 20% of teens ages 14 to 15 reported having at least one drink in their lifetime, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. While self-medicating with alcohol or other substances may seem like an easy out from your struggles, it can quickly snowball into an uncontrollable addiction. Reach out at EllipsisIowa.org for help.
