What were your best or worst math experiences? ◾Did you have a teacher who encouraged you, made you feel able, and created an environment that made learning fun? ◾Maybe you had a less than stellar experience in math that left you feeling confused, unsure, and low-confidence, but then someone helped you get past it to a more positive experience. ◾Perhaps you won a math competition or challenge or were part of a math team or club. How have your experiences shaped the way you see math? For such a fundamental and objective part of reality, we often have very different, very subjective views on math. #mathinstruction #mathteachers #mathed #education

Do you or your district have students with gaps in their math learning? How about teachers looking for effective strategies and high-quality, research-aligned materials to support early intervention? Summer Elevation could be exactly what your district needs—and it's not just for summer! Many districts implement Summer Elevation year-round to address learning loss and to provide just-in-time support, aiding students by providing access to grade-level content whenever they need it: before, during, or after school. What makes it so effective? It’s built around the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions (Smith and Stein). To learn more, head over to our page on Summer Elevation and connect with us—we’d love to solve all of your math problems! https://buff.ly/4hjX1y8 #mathinstruction #mathteachers #edleadership

Happy World Logic Day! Let’s think logically and avoid these common logical fallacies: ◾Ad Hominem Fallacy Instead of addressing the actual argument and proving the conclusion or premise false with sound reasoning and evidence, the speaker attacks the person making the argument. Example: “Don’t listen to what he’s saying about that, he’s not an experienced enough chess player.” ◾Straw Man Fallacy The speaker reduces the argument down to a more easily defeatable position, often intentionally misrepresenting what the other person is saying. Example: ▪️Original Argument: “We need to have chess practice once a week during recess to improve our team’s skills.” ▪️Straw Man Argument: “You don’t care about students’ health because you want to take away recess.” ◾Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc Fallacy This Latin phrase meaning “after this, therefore because of this” describes the fallacious thinking one might have when they assume that because one event followed another, it was caused by it. Sometimes this is the case, but in real life there are often many confounding variables, and this overly simplistic view can be misleading or outright incorrect. Example: “I wore my red shirt and lost a chess match. I shouldn’t wear a red shirt while playing chess because I will lose.” Challenge yourself to recognize these logical fallacies that we or others around us sometimes unknowingly commit—and maybe teach someone else about them! After all, critical thinking and logic are integral parts of mathematical thinking! #logicalthinking #criticalthinking #worldlogicday

If you thought the only STEM Emerald Education posts about involves science, technology, engineering, and math—think again! Today is National Houseplant Appreciation Day, and we’re celebrating by making sure our resident photosynthesizing friends have been given all the water, sunlight, and love they need. After all, they work tirelessly for us, boosting our mood, cleaning the air, and even sharpening our focus! At Emerald Ed, some of us were normal about 5 plants ago! #houseplants #houseplantsmakepeoplehappy

Parent Tip Thursday: You don’t have to have a background in math to help your kids with their math homework. All you need to do is try multiple strategies and be okay with some productive struggle. So what can you do as a parent? Encourage a growth mindset. Here’s how you can reframe your thinking and even your child’s: 🚫Fixed Mindset: “I can’t get this—it’s too hard, and I’m just not a math person.” ✅Growth Mindset: “This is a challenging problem, but I try different strategies to solve it.” #math #mathparent #parenting #homeworkhelp

Mathematics is often called the universal language—encompassing words, symbols, syntax, numbers, and patterns that describe the world around us. 🌍➗✨ As educators, whether or not we have formal math backgrounds, we instinctively recognize that math is everywhere, shaping and permeating our reality. But how do we help our students develop this understanding and transform it into practical knowledge that can support their future careers? At Emerald Education, we’ve created a solution: Rise Career and Math Mini-Lessons. These lessons bridge the gap between mathematical concepts and real-world applications, preparing students for success beyond the classroom. 🚀 👉 Learn more about Rise Career and Math Mini-Lessons here: https://buff.ly/3Aa2jf0 ✨ #realworldmath #careerandtechnicaleducation #math #mathed

Look at the NBA doing the math!! If you follow basketball, you’ll know that the 3-point shot has become even more popular in recent years. But did you know there’s a mathematical reason it might be advantageous for teams to take this shot more often? The math is revealed using an algebraic formula called Expected Points per Attempt (EPA). #NBAstats #algebra #statistics #sports
