A Sustainable Tarp Alternative for Disaster Survivors and Emergency Preparedness / an initiative of Every Shelter

About us

Emergency Tarp is a solution to conventional disaster tarps. We provide tarps that have been upcycled from a conventional billboard. This billboard material is already UV protected, water resistant, and contains a nylon ripstop scrim to prevent tearing. We’re taking what would be trash and creating a better solution for the victims of disasters across the US.

  • We are seeing more and more stories of these insurance nightmares from survivors of Milton and Helene. Truly devastating news about their claims. With our tarps lasting longer on roofs (1-2 yrs) compared to standard tarps (a few months), we believe our superior product will benefit any homeowner who needs more time to sort out insurance claims and wait for contractor availability. https://lnkd.in/g5imT_gA

Every Shelter's EMERGENCY TARP is the GDRC Signature Program for 2024! Many of you know that Good360 has an advisory board we call the Good360 Disaster Recovery Council (GDRC). In 2017, we started with founding members The UPS Foundation, Walmart, CVS Health, The Home Depot, and Center for Disaster Philanthropy. The goal continues to be sharing corporate best practices ensuring the right products get to the right people at the right time in disaster response and recovery. Since that time, we have grown to 20+ GDRC members across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. I'll share more about our amazing GDRC members in another post. But I want to share that the 2024 GDRC signature program is support for Every Shelter. The Emergency Tarp project incorporates product pre-positioning, disaster response, sustainability, and international humanitarian programming. Good360 is providing funding, warehousing, and shipping. Please check out their incredible program to upcycle billboard vinyl into durable tarps for domestic disasters while supporting programming across multiple continents creating shelter with dignity and creating jobs. https://lnkd.in/eDmtW8V3

  • “Emergency Tarp by Every Shelter is simple and commonsense: used billboards should be repurposed to create durable roof tarps for disaster survivors. Per FEMA, the best option in a disaster is for survivors to be able to shelter-in-place which allows an immediate working solution until timing and/or funds are available to repair the home. The reality is, the existing solution is not durable enough for the time a survivor needs before a repair can be made. The market needs stronger, more durable tarps. We take donated billboards and turn them into disaster tarps by folding them in half and sewing around the edges not only protecting the advertisement inside, but also providing an even more robust solution to disaster survivors." Stefanie Cortez Thank you Billboard Insider for featuring Emergency Tarp. We can all work together to get disaster survivors stronger, longer lasting tarps.

  • The Vinyl Institute discusses what we know here at Emergency Tarp: vinyl is "highly effective at handling extreme weather conditions". Thanks to grants from The Vinyl Institute, Emergency Tarp has stock ready to create water tight roofs for disaster survivors. Connect us today to your favorite disaster organization so we can get stronger, longer lasting tarps into disaster survivors hands.

  • How did Every Shelter decide to turn billboards into temporary shelter and emergency roof covering? In 2018, Every Shelter CEO Scott Key Saw a billboard being used to cover a refugee shelter in northwest Lebanon. Just like US domestic blue tarp (made to last 1 month), the United Nations sanctioned tarps used to shelter refugees are not made to last (usually 6-9 months), yet refugees typically spend over 20 years in a shelter made with subpar tarps. What this family did was innovate. They took a billboard after it came down and had already been using it for 2 years with little sign of damage. We began to think, what if we could take this innovation and help even more people both here in the US and refugees overseas? So we began to build relationships and partnerships with some billboard companies and operators. Because of those relationships, we were called to see if we had any billboards after Hurricane Laura hit in 2020. Because of that spark, we were able to go out and help disaster survivors put a stronger, longer lasting billboard on roofs buying time and saving money. To be clear, if the world has tarp experts, it’s these families. They’re forced to rely on these thin membranes for years on end. Emergency Tarp || Every Shelter’s role here is to expand and demonstrate the relevance of this approach both domestically and globally while laying the groundwork to scale this approach to reach as many families as possible. Every Emergency Tarp not only helps US disaster survivors, but it also goes to support our work with refugees Every Shelter.
