Until every refugee creates home

About us

Every Shelter exists to help refugees and displaced families create “home” wherever they are, for however long they remain there. Our mission is to re-localize refugee-aid ecosystems to revolve around the needs, preferences, and aspirations of displaced persons. To Every Shelter, “home” transcends the confines of a physical space; it encompasses a profound sense of belonging, stability, safety, and comfort. It represents the realization of a dream—an environment where refugees can establish roots, find solace, and thrive. Every Shelter’s vision for the future is one where each and every refugee has the power to create their own sense of home. Every Shelter is building a sustainable ecosystem that recognizes the agency and resilience of refugees. The journey towards a true sense of home is multifaceted, encompassing aspects beyond physical shelter. By addressing social integration, economic engagement, and built-environment innovation, Every Shelter aims to unlock the potential within each refugee, allowing them to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. In essence, Every Shelter seeks to reconfigure the humanitarian aid sector to put refugees and displaced peoples back in the center of their own story.

  • In Uganda’s refugee settlements, many homes are dark and unlit due to the lack of electricity. To address this, we’ve introduced plastic bottle skylights—an eco-friendly solution that repurposes plastic bottles to provide natural lighting, improving daily life for families. We're so thankful for our partnership with The Vinyl Institute and the Vinyl Sustainability Council. Getting to know Jay Thomas has been a huge bonus of that partnership. Through that partnership we are establishing a new product venture for Every Shelter called Emergency Tarp; a roofing tarp made from upcycled domestic billboard material meant for protecting damaged roofs after hurricanes and tornados. Our hope is to leverage this product to support our work with refugees oversees while supporting disaster survivors closer to home.

"Refugees stay displaced for 20 years on average, globally". Every Shelter does incredible work providing homes for refugees and victims of natural disasters. Their team has a program to repurpose vinyl billboards into disaster tarps, which last longer and are more durable than current tarps. Hear from Co-founder and CEO Scott Key on how he describes the organizations mission. You can watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/eNTRvj7u

We had a great event last week - thanks in large part to Ana Martín Gil and Kelsey P. Norman, Ph.D. At Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. When we decided to host a context-rich discussion about the current refugee regime, my first thought was to try to convince them to help pull it off. They didn’t hesitate. Better Shelter had a beautiful exhibit up which definitely added weight and gravity. Seeing the faces, stories, and homes of those effected by displacement was very centering for the talks and commentary. So thankful for Jocelyn Wyatt, Evan Easton-Calabria, and Achilles Kallergis for their thoughtful talks and answers to the audience’s questions.

🎉Celebrating 1 year at Every Shelter Exactly one year ago on this day, I started work and Every Shelter, and it has been an eventful year filled with #growth. The work culture encourages growth and exploration, especially with the reminders that "no idea is a stupid idea." I`ve had the liberty to share my thoughts on projects, and pilots, and to contribute in every little way that I can. Every Shelter is invested in building the capacity of its staff, and it would be a lie, if I said that I haven`t grown over the months, due to the resources, and agency given to make work possible. 📌 Over the past year, I`ve gained clarity in many aspects of my past, present, and future some of which I`d like to share. 1. Many decades ago, my parents moved to Uganda as refugees. I was born a national, years after they had found grounding and established a life for themselves. They were able to build a #home, away from the home they once knew, a place that to us, their children, was the only home we knew. But in the settlements, many #displaced people are waiting for peace to return to their countries so that they can go #back #home. The conditions that they live in are heartbreaking, considering that once owned lands, and livestock, a good life before conflict or disaster took them away, and the #displacement they live in can drag for up to 20 years! This co-relation gives meaning to my ambition as a #humanitarian and the work that I do with Every Shelter, an organization that is dedicated to its work "Until Every Refugee Creates Home." 2. Having done my bachelor's degree in Human Rights, Peace and Humanitarian Interventions, I had many options on what to do at the point of furthering my education. I had possibilities like an MA #Development #Studies, International Relations, #Public #Policy, and a few other options here and there. Although they are all great and relevant in getting the knowledge I need for the impact I desire to make in my career walk and service, I have found a clearer direction of my near-term goals when it comes to my academic pursuit, which is in line with #crisis and #humanitarian #emergencies. I have also had the opportunity to be enrolled on the Stanford Design School for a course in Design for Social Impact, as a courtesy of the organization, and the knowledge I am acquiring and the skill set I am building from this course is and will be very instrumental in my contribution to the innovative work that we do to serve refugees in #Bidibidi and #Nakivale Refugee settlements. Overall, I am grateful to the team I have gotten to work with, learn from, walk with and, engage with, in the goal of realizing Every Shelter`s mission and vision. #Humanitarianism #Development #Refugees

Driving Social Impact through Partnerships, Innovation, and Design.

I’m proud to announce that Scott Austin Key , Every Shelter , and the Baker Institute will be joining us for evening during #ClimateWeekNewYork. We’ll be exploring the conversation arond protracted crises—an issue that not only touches our shared humanity but also reveals the vastly different preconditions facing people who have been forced to flee. Nearly a decade ago, Scott journeyed all the way to Amnö, a quiet countryside farm outside Stockholm, where we at Better Shelter were in the early stages of prototyping what would become our Relief Housing Unit . Scott came with a genuine curiosity, seeking to understand how we could collaborate and offer displaced people a sense of home, even in the most temporary of circumstances. Since that time, both Every Shelter and Better Shelter have grown in ways neither of us could have fully predicted. We've navigated the highs and the lows—the moments of breakthrough and the inevitable failures that come with meaningful innovation. But our paths have never quite aligned. Until now. On Thursday, September 26th, we’ll finally come together with the Baker Institute for an evening conversation titled “Mind the Gap.” Alongside renowned thinkers and academics, we’ll explore the complexities of protracted crises and the unique challenges that arise when trying to provide shelter in such uncertain conditions. I invite you to join us: Mind the Gap - How to Better Meet the Needs of Refugees in Protracted Situations https://lnkd.in/d-pueQxt Climate Group #BakerInstitute
