A new study reveals how #AlzheimersDisease may cause brain damage in two distinct phases. The first, early phase happens slowly and silently, before people experience memory problems, harming just a few vulnerable cell types. In contrast, the second, late phase causes damage that is more widely destructive and coincides with the appearance of symptoms and the rapid accumulation of plaques, tangles, and other Alzheimer's hallmarks. While there is currently no cure for dementia or Alzheimer's, early detection and diagnosis are key for slowing down the progression of the disease and this research provides a promising direction for early interventions even when asymptomatic. https://lnkd.in/enJTTwFu

An estimated 4.3 million people 55 or older who have cognitive impairment or dementia live alone in the United States. Almost half of these older adults belong to communities of color. Most older adults living alone with cognitive impairment cannot afford private home care aides on a daily basis for months or even years. Hiring a private home care aide costs, on average, more than $4,000 per month. Medicare does not cover the long-term use of home care aides. Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) presents unique challenges that can make caregiving especially complex. Unlike other forms of dementia, LBD symptoms fluctuate, including unpredictable cognitive changes, hallucinations, and severe sleep disturbances. This can create a particularly demanding caregiving experience, requiring flexibility, patience, and specialized knowledge. The more informed you are, the better you can support those with LBD and family caregivers going through the ups and downs of this challenging condition. https://bit.ly/3X9Y2jo #LewyBodyDementia #DementiaAwareness
