I had the opportunity to sit down with Ken Kerschbaumer from Sports Video Group during Sportel Monaco. We got to discuss the state of the sports streaming industry and where its headed, informed by my experience navigating through other media businesses that have been massively disrupted by technology, such as the music and publishing industries. From my point of view, perpetual advancements in technology have enabled the consumer to continuously change their behavior and preferences rapidly, seeking the best experiences, flexibility, and value for their entertainment dollar. Speaking specifically about direct-to-consumer (D2C) business models in sport, these channels are now a must have as part of an overall media rights and fan engagement strategy. Savvy operators understand that this channel can and should be synergistic to both traditional distribution as well as more nascent channels, such as the proliferation of FAST distribution, requiring their own value proposition for consumers based on distinct programming choices, pricing, and connection back to the real world fan experience. It’s also important to understand that like any new business model, D2C is not something you can flip a switch on and immediately replace the revenues lost from the decline of traditional channels. New D2C launches are rarely overnight successes but media channels that will track extremely well for long-term, profitable growth. To get this right, it requires patience and investment, especially in an oversaturated environment where consumers are bombarded with endless options for entertainment - both in free and premium paid experiences. The most important point is to get smart about what your consumer wants, that perhaps is not currently fulfilled by other channels, and then start building a direct relationship with your consumer that meets those needs head on.
