About us

Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK) cultivates a passion for science, leadership and service in a diverse community of learners. Through mentorship, stewardship, outdoor experiences, and hands-on exploration ELK builds pathways to nature, college, science careers, and other "destinations" where our youth are historically underrepresented. We serve diverse youth around the Denver metro area. ELK (Environmental Learning for Kids) is an inclusive non-profit organization that develops inspired and responsible leaders through science education and outdoor experiences for underserved, urban youth ages 5-25. ELK Inspires youth to have high expectations of themselves by exposing them to the outdoors and engaging them in service learning projects. For many of the youth ELK serves, it’s their first experience with the outdoors. ELK Educates youth through science and environmental education embedded in all programs and activities, furthers students’ understanding and attitudes toward science, the outdoors, their communities, college, and careers. ELK Transforms youth by endowing them with increased academic skills, civic and community leadership, environmental stewardship, and employment opportunities.

  • This weekend, we took thirty youth and their families out on the ice! 🎣❄️ It was a day filled with excitement, learning, and connection to Colorado's beautiful outdoors. By introducing these incredible young minds to ice fishing, we're not only helping them discover the joy of nature, but we’re also opening doors to the world of STEM and environmental science. These experiential experiences serve to spark new passions and even future careers. We're so proud to help create lasting memories while fostering a love for the environment and hands-on learning. Join us next time as we continue to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and outdoor adventurers!

  • Always, but especially this February, we honor the rich contributions of Black individuals to our world while reflecting on the importance of access, representation, and opportunity in all spaces – especially the outdoors. At ELK, we are committed to empowering under-encouraged BIPOC youth through hands-on science education, outdoor recreation, career exploration, and leadership development. By creating pathways for young leaders to thrive, we help build a future where outdoor spaces are truly for everyone. We believe in fostering a love for the outdoors and giving every young person the tools they need to explore, grow, and lead. Together, we can ensure that the outdoors becomes a place of equity, inclusivity, and endless possibility. #BlackHistoryMonth #OutdoorEquity #YouthLeadership #BIPOC #ScienceEducation #InclusiveFuture

  • This #MLKDay, we reflect on Dr. King's vision for a 🌎 where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. At ELK, we are committed to uplifting under-encouraged youth through science education, outdoor recreation, career exploration, and leadership development—building stewards who will carry Dr. King's message of service and community forward. We urge you to use today as an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s values and continue his work. Even on a ❄️ day, there are meaningful ways to get involved and grow in his spirit: ✅ Learn: Take some time to read about Dr. King’s life and the Civil Rights Movement. Watch inspiring documentaries or listen to his speeches. Explore online resources or libraries for educational materials about MLK and his work. ✅ Serve: It’s never too cold to give back. Reach out to neighbors who might need help with shoveling, or organize a virtual event to support those in need. Find creative ways to serve and show kindness in your community. ✅ Reflect & Plan: Spend time thinking about how you can lead change in your own life and community. What are the issues you’re passionate about? What actions can you take to create a more inclusive and just world? ✅ Connect with Nature: Head outside for some fresh air and reflect on Dr. King’s vision of peace and unity. Whether you’re hiking, sledding, or just walking in the snow, take time to enjoy the outdoors and think about how you can contribute to a healthier, more connected world. Stay tuned for more impactful ELK stewardship projects in 2025. In the meantime, let’s keep Dr. King’s dream alive by continuing to support and empower one another to reach new heights. Happy MLK Day! ✊🏽
