  • As we conclude our recap series from the Chicago Build Expo, we’re reminded of the dynamic and evolving landscape of architecture and urban design. Throughout the past few days, we’ve highlighted key takeaways from our panelists: Ed Curley, AIA, LEED AP Curley delved into the challenges of integrating emerging technologies in high-rise buildings, emphasizing the importance of resilience and adaptability. Patrick Carata, AIA, LEED BDC explored Chicago’s unique potential for adaptive reuse, sharing lessons from recent projects that breathe new life into historic buildings. Ryan Peterson, AICP showed how thoughtful urban design, and integrated planning can lead to safer and more inclusive cities. Laura Rebbe discussed barriers to women achieving leadership positions and ways Epstein is working to dismantle these barriers. These discussions reinforced our belief that innovation in architecture goes hand-in-hand with a commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and future-proofing the spaces we create. We hope this series has sparked new ideas and conversations. At Epstein, we remain dedicated to pushing boundaries, addressing the complexities of our built environment, and delivering thoughtful solutions that respond to the needs of today while anticipating the demands of tomorrow. Thank you for following along! We’d love to hear your thoughts on the future of high-rise design, adaptive reuse, and urban safety—or any of the other topics we covered. Let’s keep the conversation going! Feel free to reach out for a deeper conversation on these topics or to explore potential partnerships. Together, we can continue to shape the future of our cities and communities.

  • Epstein at the Chicago Build Expo: Unlocking Chicago’s Potential Through Adaptive Reuse Chicago's rich architectural landscape offers a unique opportunity for adaptive reuse. Patrick Carata, AIA, LEED BDC emphasized how Epstein leverages this potential, referencing recent successes and strategic insights: Why Chicago is Ideal for Adaptive Reuse "With a wealth of historically significant and non-designated buildings, Chicago's regulatory and financial incentives, such as tax credits, encourage adaptive reuse. Epstein’s recent competition win to redevelop the former Army depot at 1769 West Pershing Road exemplifies this opportunity." Key Factors for Successful Adaptive Reuse "Flexibility is essential. From assessing structural conditions to planning for future adaptability, each project is a unique challenge. Identifying the presence of hazardous materials, structural reinforcement needs, and fire safety standards must be carefully considered to ensure compliance and longevity." Epstein’s adaptive reuse projects breathe new life into Chicago’s historic buildings while addressing modern needs for sustainability and community engagement. https://lnkd.in/g-zu_2Pp

  • Epstein is proud to lead as the Architect of Record on the Chicago Union Station Concourse Improvement Project, partnering with FXCollaborative to bring this transformative project to life. As part of the Chicago Hub Improvement Program (CHIP) [https://lnkd.in/guMsj7ec], these renovations will accommodate growing passenger demand while improving safety for intercity and commuter travelers on both Amtrak and Metra Commuter Rail services. Epstein’s work on the Concourse Improvement Project will create an open space for travelers to easily navigate through the station, reducing congestion and improving accessibility for passengers with disabilities. With millions of passengers passing through Chicago Union Station, we are honored to contribute to this iconic landmark that ensures efficient and safe travel for intercity passengers and commuters across the city. • Last week, Patrick Carata, joined Gary Pachucki, Ernest Wong, Sheilah Carroll, Nikki Kern, and George Cardenas at Bisnow’s Chicago Repositioning and Conversions Event. The panel delved into the significant value of adaptive reuse and repositioning as strategies to overcome financial constraints while modernizing cities. Patrick shared insights on how these approaches serve as powerful tools for urban renewal, attracting new interest, investment, and ‘breathing new life’ into areas in need of revitalization. One project we’re particularly excited to see progressing is the redevelopment of 1769 Pershing Road in McKinley Park, currently in the concept design phase. This project is focused on enhancing health, well-being, and community spirit in the neighborhood. Learn more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/gHxAurDM

  • Epstein at the Chicago Build Expo: Paving the Way: Women Shaping the Future of Construction It is well known that women comprise a disproportionately small percentage of the AEC industry, and an even smaller percentage of leadership within their firms and fields. In this panel discussion, Laura Rebbe discussed barriers to women achieving leadership positions and ways Epstein is working to dismantle these barriers. Flexibility Women tend to be the caregivers in family settings, taking responsibility for the needs of children, pets, and aging parents. Rigid work schedules hurt professional women by making it difficult for them to integrate their caregiving needs with the work schedule. Epstein’s flexible daily schedule removes this barrier, by allowing people to start their day as early as 6:30 or as late as 8:30. This gives people the ability to work with school or daycare drop-off and pick-up schedules, attend sporting evets, or just spend time with their families. We also have half-day Fridays all year, which allows ample time for scheduling appointments, activities, or just some much-needed self-care! Inclusivity In order to change the balance of the profession, we have to change the pipeline of people entering the profession. Not only does this mean more women choosing to enter the AEC industry, but more diversity of people in general. To part of this change, Epstein has been a proud firm participant of and contributor to ACE Mentor Program of America Chicago for 10 years! The ACE Mentor program provides educational opportunities for high school students to learn about the architecture, construction, and engineering fields as well as scholarships, internships, and design-build experiences. In fact all three of our 2024 architectural summer interns were former ACE students! Beyond ACE, we are including a wider set of candidates for employment, considering people whose paths look different than our own. This includes people with non-traditional licensure paths and people who have left and reentered the profession. Epstein’s policies and practices strive to make a more inclusive and welcoming environment to people from diverse backgrounds. Increasing the diversity of our profession will benefit us, our clients, and our society. Check out our open positions: https://lnkd.in/gNMJGxnn

  • Epstein at the Chicago Build Expo: Designing Safer Cities Through Integrated Urban Planning Urban design plays a pivotal role in creating safe, inclusive, and connected communities. Ryan Peterson, AICP showcased Epstein’s efforts in safety action planning, particularly in suburban Chicago: Active Transportation and Safety Planning "Our work in McHenry and Will Counties focuses on identifying high-risk areas through crash data analysis and community engagement. This results in targeted solutions that enhance safety for all road users." Breaking Down Silos for Effective Design "Successful urban design involves collaboration across disciplines. By integrating engineering, planning, and architecture, we implement strategies like Complete Streets, traffic calming measures, and improved connectivity—keeping accessibility and equity at the core." Epstein’s holistic approach to urban design fosters safer and more equitable communities by prioritizing accessibility and connectivity. https://lnkd.in/gaFuwmME
