Sex workers should get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) regularly to protect their health and the health of their clients and partners:
Frequency
The CDC recommends getting tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis at least once a year. Sex workers with multiple or anonymous partners should get tested more frequently, every 3 to 6 months. Sex workers should get tested for HIV at least once a year, and more frequently if they inject drugs.
What to test for
In addition to the most common STIs, sex workers should also get tested for STIs that can be transmitted even when there are no symptoms, such as herpes, trichomoniasis, and HPV.
Other preventive health care
Sex workers should also get vaccinated for hepatitis B and possibly A, get Pap tests, and use contraception.
Some barriers to sex workers accessing sexual health care include: Disliking needles, Disliking examinations, Difficulty getting to the clinic, and Length of time spent in the clinic.
