It was a great pleasure to be invited to join the round table discussion on the future of AI for materials R&I in Europe as part of the strategic EC initiative “Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership”. Together with the unit of jurgen tiedje under DG-RTD Director Maria Cristina Russo , we discussed how to ensure European independence and avoid fragmentation of the European R&I ecosystems within materials research and innovation. The 2 main European materials societies, FEMS - Federation of European Materials Societies and European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) co-hosted the event and I believe that we will see an even stronger collaboration in the future - which will also be required taking into account the challenges facing Europe industry. I am particularily curious about the expected launch of the “Materials Commons” initiative later this year and a digital infrastructure for materials science in EU. Amaya Igartua from Tekniker told the story of our “grass-root” Advanced Materials 2030 Initiative leading up to the IAM-I Innovative Advanced Materials Initiative where we will have our first General Assembly next week. As my humble contribution to Amayas presentation, I gave the first introduction of the idea of an AI-assisted tool for coupling European R&I initiatives within Advanced Materials, that Teknologisk Institut will soon start working on together with partners from all over Europe including BNN - BioNanoNet , Chalmers Industriteknik , TECNALIA Research & Innovation and INESC TEC. Really looking forward to continuing the collaboration with so many great people to improve European industrial competitiveness and resilience.

Our project HARMLESS is mentioned in the National Nanotechnology Initiative Environmental, Health, and Safety Research Strategy: 2024 Update, as one of the notable projects developing innovative approaches to read-across & grouping for nanomaterials that could significantly inform and enhance NNI's strategy!! Have your say on the future of (Eco)Toxicological Research in Europe! 🧪🇪🇺 A survey is now open for all (eco)toxicology research experts in Europe. It is coordinated by the EU co-funded European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC) in synergy with many other (eco)toxicological research initiatives in Europe. The mapping concerns CAPACITIES AND RESOURCES - laboratories, expertise and human resources, that are now available (current status), and will be needed (prospective vision). The scope is on INNOVATIVE RESEARCH OF CHEMICAL HAZARDS and includes all aspects of (eco)toxicological research of chemicals, mixtures, contaminated matrices or hazardous materials.   The objective is to establish a catalogue of resources and – importantly – collect material for follow-up coordinated prioritization and efforts of (eco)toxicological community in Europe.
