European Union Delegation to the United States

This week, we concluded our last Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program of the year. From December 8-11, 20 young Americans visited Brussels, the home of the European Union, to learn about the institution's unique makeup. Participants gained a deeper understanding of EU history, institutions, and functions. They also had the opportunity to meet high-level officials from both the EU and United States who work on strengthening transatlantic ties. Other highlights: 🔹 A visit to the U.S. Mission to the European Union, where they engaged with Deputy Chief of Mission Norman Thatcher Scharpf and heard from Nathaniel Haft, a Gilman alumnus now serving as Political Unit Chief. 🔹 A discussion with Ruth Bajada, Deputy to the Director of the Americas and Head of Division for U.S. and Canada at the European External Action Service. She will soon join us in Washington as the next Deputy Ambassador! 🔹 Meeting MEP Brando Benifei from Italy, who represents the voice of European citizens in the European Parliament and serves as the Chair of the Delegation for relations with the United States. As our scholars return home for the holidays, we hope they are inspired to enter the field of diplomacy or perhaps revisit Europe through the many educational opportunities they discovered on their trip. Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Virginia Tech’s conference on the future of the transatlantic relationship in the aftermath of the U.S. elections, with participation from Jean Monnet Centers of Excellence from across the country! Following opening remarks by EU Ambassador Jovita Neliupšienė, the day was filled with panels and round tables featuring colleagues from our Delegation, as well as partners from Virginia Tech, CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies), and the Jean Monnet Centers. This was a great opportunity to strengthen our ties with Jean Monnet Centers, as they help us foster deeper academic collaboration and promote mutual understanding of EU-U.S. relations. The EU is committed to collaborating with the United States on shared issues and challenges following the presidential election. Jean Monnet Centers act as multipliers of this message to their communities. Thank you for choosing us as your conference host!

🏙️🚲 The EU-funded IURC North America program has released a new Sustainable Urban Mobility and Transport Best Practice: "Promoting Bike Ridership: The Success of bergamoinbicicletta.it"   Urban mobility and environmental sustainability go hand in hand, and Bergamo, Italy, is leading by example with its comprehensive bike initiative, bergamoinbicicletta.it. With transport accounting for around 25% of CO2 emissions in the EU, encouraging alternative mobility solutions is critical.   Comune di Bergamo, a city in northern Italy, is an example of a successful and comprehensive effort to transform bike ridership. With a clear focus on sustainability and community engagement, the bergamoinbicicletta.it project is setting the stage for a healthier, cleaner, and more bike-friendly future.
