European Patients' Academy on Therapeutic Innovation

About us

The European Patients’ Academy on Therapeutic Innovation (EUPATI) provides education and training for patients and patient representatives on the process of medicines research and development (R&D). The trained patient experts are key to realising meaningful patient engagement in medicines R&D, regulatory deliberations and other activities. EUPATI was established by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) in 2012, and was hosted by the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) as a Public-Private Partnership Programme 2017-2020. EUPATI is today established as an independent non-profit Foundation in the Netherlands and has 24 National Platforms in Europe and in Japan. “We focus on education and training to increase the capacity and capability of patients to be valuable contributors to medicines research and development by working with patients and the stakeholders they collaborate with.”

We are immensely proud to showcase EUPATI and some of the great members of our network, with this video filmed during our Annual General Meeting earlier in September. 🎬 👏 This is just a snippet of who we are as a community of stakeholders, but it is energising and reassuring to see so many people from various disciplines, countries, disease areas, come together to make the patient voice heard. Together, we are building tomorrow’s healthcare system ensuring that patient involvement is a key prerogative.  This video, is a thank you to all those who’ve been a part of this journey with us 💙   A special thank you to our interviewees: Alice Larotonda, Ph.D., Rebecca Mbewe, Petra ADÁMKOVÁ,  Ivo Schauwecker, Marzena Nelken, Begoña Nafría Escalera, Daniel De Schryver, and Matthias Gottwald. #EUPATI #EUPATIAGM2024 #Partnerships #Collaboration #PatientInvolvement #HealthcareInnovation

EUPATI is glad to have been part of this important discussion on patient involvement within Health data and AI, during the 5th anniversary of the Data Saves Lives (DSL) initiative launched by the European Patients' Forum.  It was also a great opportunity to connect again with some EUPATI Fellows and friends whilst together in Brussels (Derick Mitchell, Evelyn Groß (ÖMCCV), Janek Kapper, Gregor Cuzak, Sheila Khawaja) 😊    As an organisation, we look forward to stepping up the educational efforts in the area of health data, together with EPF and other partners, further strengthening our collaborations within the patient involvement space. 🤝   Congratulations to EPF for 5 years of this successful initiative, and looking forward to many more!   #EUPATI #EPF #Partners #Collaboration #HealthData #DTSL5

🌍 EUPATI is teaching relevant stakeholders to collaborate with patients across cultures 🌟    On December 11, EUPATI will host Module 2 of our Essentials Training, part of our training portfolio targeting Industry and Academia professionals.     Stakeholders sometimes lack the know-how to properly and efficiently engage patients in the appropriate phases of the medecines lifecycle. With this hands-on session, members gain the following knowledge:    - A stronger understanding of how culture shapes communication and healthcare interactions.  - Insights into the current cultural challenges in clinical trials and patient engagement.  - Practical strategies for fostering inclusive and meaningful collaborations with patients.  - Best practices and examples to improve your engagement across diverse settings.    ️ Why does this matter?     In today’s globalised world, understanding cultural diversity is essential for building stronger partnerships with patients and advancing healthcare outcomes. For example, religious beliefs can impact a individuals treatment choice, ethnicity can play a part in one’s response to a treatment and lack of literacy can restrain someone from participating in a clinical trial.  💡 Join us on December 11 from 14:00 to 18:00 CET for this interactive online training and gain practical tools, real-world insights, and valuable skills to make your patient engagement a prerogative in your workplace.    👉 Register here: https://bit.ly/4fYRcov #PatientInvolvement #HealthcareInnovation #EUPATIESSENTIALS #AdvancedTraining #Academia #Pharma #PatientEngagement

Congratulations to EUPATI Switzerland for hosting yet another successful Swiss Patient Forum! This event aims to identify the basic support needs of patient representatives and to develop central messages and demands that come from these. The morning workshop and the panel discussions brought together many valuable insights and ideas, which were then presented by the President of EUPATI Switzerland, Ivo Schauwecker. We are proud to see so many great local initiatives working towards empowering patients to be valued stakeholders 👏 👏 👏

It was a pleasure to attend this year’s ISPOR—The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research conference in sunny Barcelona, earlier this week 🙌 During the event, EUPATI hosted a session on ‘Empowering Patients to Be Effective Stakeholders and Partners in the EU Health Technology Assessment Process.’ 🎯 The session was moderated by our Executive Director Maria Dutarte and joined by presenters Finn McCartney, Project Coordinator for the HTA4Patients project, Lotte Klim, EUPATI Fellow and Valentina Strammiello, Director of Strategic Initiatives at European Patients' Forum. It was also great to reconnect with the rest of the EUPATI family: Petra ADÁMKOVÁ, Angie B., Mitchell Silva, PhD and Marzena Nelken ! 🤝 Our session dived into how patients can prepare for the EU HTA process which will start in 2025, presented the training materials that can be accessed from EUPATI and the EUCAPA project, and the challenges and learnings on creating educational materials on the HTA Regulation. We are excited to provide trainings for patient communities on HTA and the HTAR in the coming months, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be effective stakeholders in this process! You can find a summary of our session from Becraris publishing here: https://lnkd.in/eC2m96bi If you are interested in accessing free educational materials on the HTAR, start learning here: https://lnkd.in/dZdRyp8V #HTA4Patients #EUPATI #HealthTechnologyAssessment #Training #Education #HealthcareInnovation #EU4Health #EUHTAR #HTA #StartLearningToday #HealthUnion #EU4Health #HaDEA#PatientEmpowerment #HealthPolicy  #ISPOREurope

🌍 Patient Involvement on a Global Scale 🩺 During the EUPATI Annual General Meeting in September, Claudia Egher (Utrecht University) shed light on the disparities in global patient engagement:   This process mostly thrives in developed countries, but lags in countries facing historical inequalities, regulatory gaps and accessibility challenges.  In her presentation, Claudia highlighted various possible solutions that should be implemented:     ✅ Culturally adapted engagement to boost participation.  ✅ Multilingual, accessible education for patients worldwide.  ✅ Building long-term relationships to foster trust.  ✅ Flexible, stage-specific training for diverse patient needs.  ✅ Policy advocacy for equitable access in underserved regions.  ✅ Early integration of patient perspectives in drug development for greater relevance.    💡 A global shift is needed to ensure patient voices are heard everywhere. Let’s work together to close the gap!    #PatientEngagement #HealthEquity #EUPATIAGM2024 #EUPATI #HealthInnovation #DEI
