Important findings about misinformation interventions, using data from the Elections24Check database by the Science Feedback team. Check it out👇
How effective are X’s Community Notes at addressing misinformation? Here are our investigation insights during the 2024 European Parliament elections. 📖 Read our findings here: https://lnkd.in/dmJP9z-E In collaboration with the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN), Science Feedback examined tweets flagged for misinformation by professional fact-checkers across 22 European countries during the 2024 European Parliament elections. Although X’s (formerly Twitter) Community Notes—designed as a crowd-sourced tool for combating misinformation—aims to improve content moderation, our findings exposed significant gaps: flagged misinformation continued to circulate widely, even after identification by fact-checkers. 🔹Key findings: ▪︎ 68.8% of tweets that contained misinformation had no visible moderation. ▪︎ Only 11.7% featured Community Notes or warnings, and 19.5% were deleted. ▪︎ Only 51,640 Community Notes were displayed for 60M EU users in 2024—just 1 per 500,000 tweets, far below misinformation levels. ▪︎ Coverage varied greatly, with Denmark seeing 32x more Notes per user than Hungary, highlighting disparities in coverage. In conclusion, while X promotes Community Notes as a crowd-sourced alternative to professional fact-checking, our findings reveal that its limited reach and uneven application across #EU countries undermine its ability to manage #misinformation effectively, especially during critical events like #elections.
