About us
EJSO is the Official Journal of the European Society of Surgical Oncology and BASO - the Association for Cancer Surgery. The EJSO aims to advance surgical oncology research and practice through the publication of original research articles, review articles, editorials, debates and correspondence. The Editors welcome submissions on clinical research and all other aspects of surgical oncology which advance the care of patients with cancer, including surgical quality control, epidemiology, preventative aspects of surgical oncology, as well as translational research relevant to surgical oncology practice. We offer many author benefits including Your Paper, Your Way (YPYW). YPYW is an easier submission process, focusing on the quality of the science in the initial stages of submission and only requiring elements needed for eventual production at the revision stage. Please refer to the Guide for Authors for further information. Editorial Board: Editor-in-Chief Riccardo A. 🌟 Publication highlight! 🌟 "Predictors of Early Recurrence of Oesophagogastric Adenocarcinoma After Neoadjuvant FLOT" Despite advancements in treatment, recurrence rates for oesophagogastric adenocarcinoma remain high, particularly following curative surgery. A new study by Abbienaya Dayanamby et al. dives into predictors of early recurrence in patients treated with neoadjuvant FLOT chemotherapy. 🔍 Key Findings: - 27.6% of patients experienced recurrence during follow-up, with 13.8% having early recurrence - Median survival after recurrence is 4.1 months - Independent risk factors for ER include extracapsular spread and ypN3 stage Understanding these predictors enables tailored follow-up strategies, such as more frequent imaging and targeted treatments for high-risk patients. The advancements in AI within surgical pathology are paving the way for transformative changes. Our recent article in the Elsevier European Journal of Surgical Oncology, authored by Jens Pahnke, Abderrahman Najjar, and Ofir H., delves into the current landscape and future prospects of AI in this field. The article explores the essential infrastructure required to support digital and computational pathology, shedding light on the hurdles impeding its widespread implementation in clinical practice. From AI applications in intraoperative and postoperative scenarios to addressing quality assessment concerns in slide digitization, the paper navigates through key challenges and opportunities. Additionally, the piece discusses emerging technologies like large language models, optical biopsies, and mass spectrometry imaging, offering a glimpse into the innovative tools shaping the future of surgical pathology. A heartfelt appreciation goes out to my colleagues for their important contributions to this work. I also want to thank to Pietro Mascagni for his kind referral. We anticipate the forthcoming challenges of 2025, we are committed to driving further advancements in AI and pathology for improved patient care and outcomes. https://lnkd.in/dmg8ep3g #SurgicalPathology #AI #MedicalAdvancements

Excited to share our recent publication in European Journal of Surgical Oncology on gemcitabine-cisplatin induction treatment in patients with locally advanced perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (LAPCCA). ‼️ Key findings: ❇️ Promising resection rate: 26% of patients (6/23), initially diagnosed as unresectable, underwent successful resections, supporting routine re-staging after three to six cycles of treatment. ❇️ Induction chemotherapy is a feasible approach for LAPCCA, paving the way for larger prospective studies to assess long-term oncological benefits. ❇️ This "proof-of-principle" study supports further exploration of neoadjuvant approaches in initially resectable patients. https://lnkd.in/eXsftEEb Many thanks to the team and patients who contributed to this study! What is actually the value of "Letters to the editor" or "Comments on..."? Should we, as the scientific community, more critical or do we continue to view this as an easy way to boost publication rates? Look at our letter and decide..... #niekhugen, #mauriceloughrey, #europeanjournalofsurgicaloncology

Proud to announce that our paper has been published in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology. Robotic repeat liver surgery not only is safe and feasible, but also offers advantages over more ‘traditional’ laparoscopic and open methods. Link: https://lnkd.in/eig7a7sa Hereby, I want to express my gratitude to Mathieu D’Hondt for giving me the opportunity to collaborate on his research. Thank you as well to the co-authors of this paper for their contribution and making this publication possible - Edward Willems Celine De Meyere Isabelle Parmentier and Chris Verslype. This is also a nice completion of two years of surgical residency in az groeninge, Kortrijk. During this time, I had the chance to meet and work with inspiring people who not only deepened my knowledge and skills, but also taught me the important values in patient care. The next step: final year of surgical residency in abdominal surgery at UZ Leuven. Looking forward to it!
