🌎 Happy New Year! As we welcome 2025, we're reminded of the importance of conserving our planet’s biodiversity and supporting wildlife recovery. In December, Lomphat, a 5-month-old elephant calf, was rescued in #Cambodia after suffering a snare injury. Thanks to the swift response of the Ministry of Environment and Wildlife Alliance, Lomphat is now on her road to recovery, gaining weight and showing signs of improvement. Her story emphasizes why we must continue to support REDD+ efforts. By investing in forest communities and ensuring sustainable land-use practices, we not only protect habitats for endangered species like Lomphat, but we also help strengthen the livelihoods of those who are guardians of these critical ecosystems. Here’s to a year of bold action and meaningful impact. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gnrg3gmK #HappyNewYear #WildlifeProtection #REDD
About us
Everland represents the world’s largest portfolio of high-impact, forest conservation (REDD+) projects that protect wildlife and enhance the well-being of forest communities. The company brings together forest communities and corporations in a common cause to protect some of the world’s most important and vulnerable forests. REDD+ is an acronym for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, a UN-envisioned climate change mitigation strategy. When REDD+ projects prove they have successfully stopped deforestation, they generate Verified Emission Reductions (VERs, aka offsets or carbon credits) that can be sold to corporations who want to voluntarily offset their unavoidable emissions by supporting verified projects that stop forests from burning while delivering meaningful social and biodiversity co-benefits.

🔑 Key Finding from the Global Baseline White Paper At a system level, historical project-level REDD+ crediting was essentially identical to what it would have been under a jurisdictional approach. Over the 20-year study period, project-level REDD+ carbon crediting outcomes were essentially the same as they would have been under a jurisdictional forest reference emissions level (FREL), allocated to projects on the basis of area. This finding highlights the robustness and accuracy of REDD+ crediting under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), reinforcing confidence in its integrity and effectiveness in combating deforestation. 🔗- https://lnkd.in/eDshCg-t

🔑 Key finding from the Global Baseline White Paper Forest loss rates in REDD+ project areas were ten times lower than in surrounding jurisdictions. The analysis found that deforestation rates in REDD+ project areas were ten times lower than in their surrounding jurisdictions. Even with high leakage assumptions factored in, the projects achieved significantly reduced deforestation. This demonstrates the systematic effectiveness of REDD+ in protecting forests while delivering measurable climate benefits. Read the full paper here - https://lnkd.in/eDshCg-t

Discover the incredible story of resilience and hope from the Congo Basin. Black Water explores how the community around Lake Mai Ndombe is transforming crisis into opportunity by using #CarbonCredits to restore their ecosystem and secure their future. Watch now: https://lnkd.in/eMiStUni #BlackWater #Conservation #CarbonCreditsWork
Black Water is a poignant exploration of survival and resilience deep in the remote forest of the Congo Basin. This short film delves into the lives of a local community around Lake Mai Ndombe (which translates to “Lake of Black Water’) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This once bountiful body of water now teeters on the brink of collapse. Over the years, the lake’s vibrant fish population has dwindled, threatening the livelihoods of those who have relied on its resources for generations. The film traces this ecological decline back to an unexpected source. Through intimate interviews and breathtaking visuals, Black Water captures the struggle of the lake's surrounding communities as they face the harsh reality of dwindling resources. It explores the cultural and generational shifts brought on by the environmental crisis, revealing the deep connection between the people and the lake that sustains them. Amidst the struggle, Black Water captures a glimmer of hope. The communities have embarked on an ambitious project to restore their ecosystem. By using their profits from carbon credits earned through forest conservation, they have built sustainable fish nurseries. This project not only offers a lifeline to those on the brink of starvation but also holds the promise of restoring balance to the lake's fragile ecosystem. Watch the film and immerse yourself in the rainforests of the Congo basin to learn about this community’s plight and their solution. 🔑 Key finding from the Global Baseline white paper REDD+ project baseline forest loss predictions closely matched actual jurisdictional forest loss. When aggregated globally over a 20-year period (2002–2022), REDD+ baseline projections — which estimate deforestation in the absence of a project — closely matched the actual forest loss observed in surrounding jurisdictions. This result highlights that REDD+ carbon crediting has been robust at a system level, demonstrating that baseline methodologies have been a reasonable and effective benchmark for assessing deforestation threats. 🔗 Read more here- https://lnkd.in/eDshCg-t #REDD #ClimateImpact #Deforestation

Today, Everland and Space Intelligence published a white paper titled "Global Baseline Assessment of REDD+ Projects: Twenty Years of Carbon Crediting." Authored by Joshua Tosteson, Maren Burrows (Pauly), Ph.D. and Ed Mitchard, the study concludes that carbon crediting from REDD+ projects has been robust when assessed system-wide over its twenty-year history. The research analyzed baseline forest loss projections for 45 REDD+ projects, comparing them to actual forest loss in surrounding jurisdictions between 2002 and 2022. The findings show that REDD+ project baselines closely matched the actual forest loss which took place in their surrounding jurisdictions, and systematically achieved low levels of forest loss in comparison to the surrounding jurisdictions. Read the full paper to explore this critical research into the role of REDD+ project baselines in combating deforestation. 🔗- https://lnkd.in/eDshCg-t

I am so proud to see this groundbreaking partnership between the Government of Madagascar, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Rio Tinto, and Everland come to life. The partnership, anchored by Rio Tinto’s $16m commitment to the 372,000 hectare Makira Natural Park REDD+ Project, embodies the full promise and potential of REDD+ in action: * The integration of project-level REDD+ interventions within a national program framework, delivering tangible, meaningful results from intensive site-based work to advance Madagascar’s climate and sustainable development goals * Direct revenue sharing with the 90,000 local people who live in 120 villages in the project area * Effective conservation of a precious, threatened forest with unimaginable endemic biodiversity * A unique, action- and service-oriented public-private partnership involving government, community, conservation NGO, and private sector, with each partner playing a crucial role in bringing a shared vision to reality. I especially want to credit the leadership of WCS and Rio Tinto, in particular Todd Stevens and Theresia Ott. Bringing a partnership like this to fruition requires real vision, and an unwavering dedication to doing something truly meaningful, to bridge the obvious divides between a global conservation organization and a mining company. In this spirit of collaboration, WCS, Rio Tinto, and the Government of Madagascar have cut through all the noise, controversy, and uncertainties to do something real. No creating excuses for inaction, just getting on with the work to care for people and planet. That is my definition of integrity. The best of voluntary market, project-based REDD+ in action.
Rio Tinto has committed $16 million to the Makira Natural Park REDD+ Project in northern Madagascar, through a new partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society and Everland. This commitment will directly benefit the rural communities living in and around the Park, and help protect 372,000 hectares of primary forest, home to 17 species of lemur and more than half of Madagascar’s botanical diversity. Speaking of the news, Max Andonirina Fontaine, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Government of the Republic of Madagascar said: “This commitment by Rio Tinto to the Makira Natural Park REDD+ Project underlines the critical importance of project-level REDD+ efforts within our national program as an effective tool to halt deforestation, protect critical ecosystems and biodiversity, and fund urgently needed development priorities for local communities.” Supporting REDD+ projects helps to safeguard biodiversity, promote sustainable development, and meet global climate goals. We applaud Rio Tinto, the Madagascar Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, and WCS for their bold commitment. 🔗 For more on the announcement: https://lnkd.in/ewfSrT7v #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction #REDDPlus
