Our Chair and CTO Mike Newton attended Recycling Expo last month. Before he joined a panel which focused on fire prevention in waste and recycling facilities, he took some time to catch up with the event’s hosts. The key takeouts are: ➡ Every second counts - fast identification and verification is paramount ➡ Lithium-ion batteries are an increasing risk for operators You can watch it here ⬇️

#Everysecondcounts Watch this space for some film clips from the panel session with Mike Newton and Jonathan Hamill, hosted by John Bunn MCIWN ‘Safeguarding Recycling: Advanced Fire Prevention Planning for Modern Facilities’
I recently attended Recycling Expo as both an exhibitor and a speaker. Sitting on a panel session with @John Bunn MCIWM, Environment Agency and Jonathan Hamill, GreCon Limited, we discussed the challenges of fire prevention in waste and recycling facilities. The key themes for me are: Importance of Rapid Detection: Early detection of fires is critical. If a fire isn’t tackled within the first few minutes of ignition, it’s likely to burn until its fuel source has been consumed - this is why we talk about 'every second counts' in our business. Our FireVu solution combines smoke, flame, and heat detection technologies that work around the clock to monitor and identify fires before the point of no return. Increasing Risk of Lithium Batteries: Lithium-ion batteries are posing a significant fire hazard for the waste and recycling sector as in some cases they are causing fires before the waste has reached the plant to be processed. Research by Material Focus revealed that over 1,200 battery fires occurred in bin lorries and waste sites across the UK in the last year, a 71% increase from 2022. You can read more about this subject in a paper I have written https://lnkd.in/e_se54x3

In recent years the frequency and ferocity of fires has increased at Waste and Recycling Facilities. In each case, the impact of the fire has been substantial, not only to the operating business, but also to the local community, environment, and the resources of the Fire Service. Mike Newton founder of NetVu has written a whitepaper detailing the risks, causes, some of the major incidents, and insights into #FirePrevention, detection, and verification #EveryecondCounts Read all about it here ➡ https://lnkd.in/em7U78Ym

With the doors soon to open on Day Two of Recycling Expo at Excel London it's a good moment to reflect on some of the themes from yesterday. The waste and recycling management landscape has evolved, and one of the significant risks to emerge is the disposal of lithium batteries. Their use is prolific, and they are getting smaller, and more powerful. They are increasingly responsible for causing fires in recycling facilities - they may have even started in the lorries before they reach the facility - and statistics are showing an upward trend. The use of fire detection and verification technology is critical. While it will not stop fires from 'starting', the early detection and swift action it enables will stop them in their tracks. This will prevent an escalation that otherwise would only take a few minutes to become out of control #EverySecondCounts What are your thoughts on the increasing risk of lithium batteries? Sadly, the headlines continue to be dominated by fires that get out of control. The impact is far-reaching and devasting. A fire prevention strategy for high risk environments, such as waste and recycling plants, is vital to ensure the safety of staff, local communities, and the protection of facilities. #EverySecondCounts https://lnkd.in/e5rZR7sG
