The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recommends that people of different ages get the following amounts of sleep every 24 hours: school-age children (6–13 years): 9–11 hours teenagers (14–17 years): 8–10 hours younger adults (18–25 years): 7–9 hours adults (26–64 years): 7–9 hours To be properly rested, the body must go through several sleep cycles per night, including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. The stages of sleep include: Stage 1 non-REM: This lasts for only a few minutes. Breathing, heart rate, and brain waves begin to slow. Stage 2 non-REM: This stage occurs before the body enters deep sleep. The muscles relax even more, and body temperature drops. Stage 3 non-REM: A person needs to reach this stage of deep sleep to feel rested, and it lasts longer in the first half of the night. Breathing and heart rate slow to their lowest levels. REM sleep: Within 90 minutes of falling asleep, a person enters REM sleep. The brain becomes more active, the most dreaming occurs, and the arms and legs become temporarily paralyzed. If the body does not go through these stages several times a night, the person may wake feeling fatigued and unfocused. #sleep #sleepbetter #sleeping #sleepdeprivation #firstchoiceneurology

With all the talk about New Year's #resolutions, #diet and exercise are always the hottest topics. Good Morning America and The Today show reported that the top diets are the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND Diets. Many experts regard the Mediterranean and DASH diets as two of the healthiest diets. Research has shown that they can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases. MIND stands for “Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. The #MINDDiet also differs from the Mediterranean and DASH diets it focuses on boosting cognitive function. It focuses on increasing your intake of high-nutrient foods (vegetables, nuts, berries, whole grains, fish, and poultry) and minimizing high-sodium foods (meats, fried foods, and sweets). As 2024 comes to a close, we at First Choice Neurology (FCN) are proud to reflect on a year filled with growth, innovation, and milestones that have furthered our commitment to patient care. This year, we welcomed eleven exceptional neurologists to our group, expanding our reach and expertise. Our physicians and recruitment team actively participated in over 20 prestigious annual meetings, symposiums, and conferences, staying at the forefront of neurological advancements. Notably, two of our doctors were among the first in the nation to administer Kisunla (donanemab), the newly FDA-approved breakthrough drug for Alzheimer’s patients. First Choice Neurology continues to lead in neurological research, with several care centers actively participating in dozens of research studies this year. FCN celebrated the opening of four additional infusion centers, and a state-of-the-art sleep center, and launched new programs designed to enhance patient outcomes and accessibility. These accomplishments are a testament to our dedication to advancing neurological care, and we look forward to building on this momentum in 2025. The GUIDE Model establishes a standardized approach to dementia care by addressing critical needs, including: • Supporting unpaid caregivers with respite services and targeted resources. • Screening for health-related social needs to ensure comprehensive care. • Providing caregiver training, education, and ongoing support. Key features of the program include 24/7 access to a support line and a range of services aimed at helping individuals with dementia remain safely in their homes for as long as possible, reducing the need for nursing home placement. By focusing on the well-being of both individuals with dementia and their caregivers, the GUIDE Model enhances quality of life and promotes long-term, sustainable care solutions. Do you know what neurodivergent means? In the late 1990s, a sociologist from Australia coined the term “#neurodiversity” in recognition that not everybody’s brain develops in the same way. A natural outgrowth of that has been “#neurodivergent,” a term initially used by people with #autism to describe the ways their brains function differently. It’s been widely adopted as an alternative to “disorder” or “abnormal” and praised as an affirmation of atypical neurologic strengths. It applies to people with learning or #intellectualdisabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, mental illness, and #neurodevelopmentaldisorders such as cerebral palsy and epilepsy, Its counterpart—“#neurotypical”—describes people whose brains are considered usual or expected by society. Neither neurotypical nor neurodivergent is a clinical diagnosis. A study published this summer in the Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education says the term “neurodiversity” became popular after a 1993 essay that challenged parents of children with autism to embrace the diagnosis. The authors of the recent study write that the term represents a “movement for equality and equity in the perception and treatment of all peoples regardless of their neurotype. It promotes #inclusion and #acceptance, advocating for better accessibility and the protection of disabled rights. https://lnkd.in/gBfWy9P3
