Today, we presented the Food Alert simulation and methodology to the Expert Group supporting the European Food Security Crisis Preparedness and Responsiveness Mechanism (EFSCM). There were some excellent questions. ❓ How can such simulations affect policy practice? The simulation allows participants to gain awareness of various interconnections in the system and to become aware of possible surprises that might emerge. It also allows participants to rehearse different responses, gain insights into tradeoffs, and see how things might play out. That can win you time and lead to better responses in real crises because you're not starting from scratch. Perhaps even more importantly, the simulation fosters relationships among the participants. They know who to call in a real crisis and have a certain level of trust and good faith based on the collaboration in the simulation. ❓ Is the "model" specific to this scenario, or can it be used for other situations? Our methodology includes a conceptual framework of the scenario where initial shocks trigger a cascades of knock-on effects that are transmitted in space and time. Similarly, responses may cascade from one place to another or over time. Many different scenarios can be built on this framework. The first workshop happened to use climate shocks as the primary trigger, but scenarios could include bioterrorism, zoonoses, contamination, or many other situations. In her recent article for Forbes, Felicia Jackson discusses how to prepare food systems for the climate change shocks. Importantly, Food Alert Project is mentioned as an attempt to address the food resilience challenge. Read the article at: https://lnkd.in/dWFsKWmq Here are our key takeways: 1️⃣ Current food system is vulnerable to external shocks, impacting society directly. 2️⃣ In its recent assessment, the European Environment Agency highlighted that critical heat and drought risks in southern Europe, with central Europe also at risk, could lead to prolonged droughts, thereby threatening crop production, food security, and drinking water supplies. 3️⃣ The current food system lacks resilience and experiences significant waste, with up to $1 trillion worth of produce discarded yearly (UN Environment Programme). 4️⃣ University of Oxford and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) report from this year, suggests food system transformation could yield benefits of up to $10 trillion annually. 5️⃣ #FoodAlert project calls for EU-level political action for short-term crisis preparedness, response coordination, and long-term prevention.
