Climate change is projected to cause 14.5 million deaths and $12.5 trillion in economic costs by 2050. However, strategic investments in prevention, diagnostics, and treatments could save 6.5 million lives, cut economic losses by $5.8 trillion, and prevent 1 billion disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), according to a new World Economic Forum white paper. To achieve this, the paper calls for $65 billion in focused R&D over the next 5-8 years—less than 5% of the pharmaceutical industry’s annual R&D spending. These investments could mitigate #climate-related #health challenges, including 11 diseases and conditions, from malaria to hypertension. FHF Summit has a growing reputation for bringing the right people to the right conversations at the right time. People who can - and do - take immediate action on the issues that aren't otherwise moving... the issues of paramount importance to climate policy and our collective health. We reach well beyond global health in setting our agenda, to avoid the siloed decision-making and inward advocacy that happens all too often in complex domains. And by also working closely within UN frameworks and with conference presidencies, we've managed to have a seriously outsized impact on climate dialogue and health's place within it. Thanks to those joining me on this year's Steering Committee: James Birch from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Alison Malmqvist, Martin Muchangi from Amref, Bill Pan, Tamer Rabie, Marina Belén Romanello, PhD, Anna M. Stewart Ibarra, Neil Vora, MD I hope you'll join us in Rio this April, and add your voice to the chorus demanding equitable financing and practical solutions to protect the health of our people and planet in the face of accelerating climate change. #fhfsummit #riotrio #climateaction

Climate change isn’t a future threat – across the world, we’re experiencing the real-time impacts of a rapidly changing planet. New data confirms that 2024 was the hottest year on record, with temperatures exceeding 1.5°C of warming for the first time in history. ⚠️ Without urgent action, the unprecedented extreme weather events we’re seeing today will become more frequent and severe, with devastating consequences for people and nature. 💬 Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service says: "Humanity is in charge of its own destiny. We can still change the trajectory - but action must be swift and decisive." Through our library, we’re documenting our world as it changes, equipping storytellers globally with the visual content they need to raise awareness and inspire global change to protect our future. 🎥 If you’re looking for high-quality climate content, start your search: www.openplanet.org

"The ocean is overflowing and the reason is simple: climate change," 🇺🇳 UN Secretary-General António Guterres said this week. 🌊"Global average sea levels are rising at rates unprecedented in the past 3,000 years. This a crisis entirely of humanity’s making that will soon swell to an almost unimaginable scale," said Mr Guterres, speaking from Tonga. Island nations face particular risks, but the rest of the world also has cause for alarm. Why? 💧A sea level increase of 1cm could result in a 1m retreat of coastline. And a rise of 10cm may triple the number of coastal flood events. 👇 Watch UNSW Climate Change Research Centre expert Tom Mortlock explain in this video.💡We need to understand the effects of rising seas so that we can act to reduce risks. What can be done? The Secretary-General is calling for global leaders to: 🔪 Slash global emissions; ♻️ Lead a fast and fair phase-out of fossil fuels; 🚀Boost climate adaptation investments to protect people from present and future risks.

2024 is on track to become the hottest year on record — and the first year with average global temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Research from World Weather Attribution and Climate Central, Inc. reveals the stark reality: climate change added an average of 41 additional days of dangerous heat for people worldwide last year. For small island and developing states — already on the frontlines of the climate crisis — the toll was even greater, with the highest number of dangerous heat days recorded in these regions. Despite being the deadliest type of extreme weather, heat waves remain underreported and underestimated, leaving communities at risk. As we reflect on 2024, the need for sustainable cooling solutions and decisive climate action has never been more urgent. Looking to 2025, key recommendations include: ✅ Accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels ✅ Enhancing early warning systems for extreme weather ✅ Reporting heat-related deaths in real-time ✅ Scaling up climate finance for developing nations Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gAZEVDgZ #ClimateCrisis #ExtremeHeat #ExtremeWeather #HeatWaves #ClimateAction #ClimateMitigation #ClimateAdaptation #SustainableCooling #CleanCooling #CoolingForAll #EarlyWarningSystems #HeatMortality Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre
