Forging powerful alliances that support the mission of the NIH and advance breakthrough biomedical discoveries.
About us
The mission of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) is to foster public health through scientific discovery, translational research and the dissemination of research results through specially-configured, high-impact public-private partnerships consistent with the priorities of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The FNIH is not only involved in large, ambitious initiatives with potentially high impact on the lives of millions of the world’s citizens, but it also supports smaller focused programs in clinical training and ancillary support programs. The FNIH helps to underwrite biomedical initiatives that might not be attractive for private funding alone, or for one reason or another are not appropriate for wholly public funding. The FNIH may take on projects that are particularly risky in terms of the likelihood of success or where companies may be willing to forgo profits because of early stage nature of the program or in the case of some global health initiatives due to the charitable nature of the project. The FNIH's projects tend to be longer-term, operating on a time scale that can be unattractive for private investors. At the same time the foundation is capable of responding quickly and nimbly to funding needs that are immediate and pressing. With the goals of NIH as its guide, the FNIH serves both the public and private sectors, helping them achieve significant breakthroughs in human health in areas of interest that overlap with those of NIH. Exciting news: The FDA has accepted the Qualification Plan for a urine biomarker panel to be used in conjunction with standard laboratory tests to indicate response to drug-induced injury to the kidneys. This would support early detection, monitoring, and potential reversibility of kidney injuries during clinical trials. This achievement is made possible through the Clinical Evaluation and Qualification of Translational Kidney Safety Biomarkers Project, a public-private partnership managed by the FNIH Biomarkers Consortium Kidney Safety Biomarker Project Team and the Critical Path Institute (C-Path) Predictive Safety Testing Consortium’s Nephrotoxicity Working Group. This initiative brought together expertise from government, academia, industry, and advocacy organizations. Congratulations to all those involved! The FNIH commends The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission's recommendations to adopt nuanced approaches for measuring body fat to diagnose obesity in addition to the traditionally used BMI measure. Evidence-based measurements are critical to delivering precision care to all people living with obesity, especially in this new era of many types of anti-obesity medicines.
Over 1 billion people live with obesity. There is an urgent need for a universal definition and diagnosis. 🆕 A Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission introduces a new model with categories: clinical obesity (an illness) and pre-clinical obesity. This reframing identifies medically meaningful targets for prevention and treatment. Joe Nadglowski, patient advocate and Commissioner, adds: “Studies show that the way obesity is usually talked about adds to weight stigma, making it harder to prevent, manage and treat. The approach proposed by this Commission can help clear up misconceptions.” Read in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology ➡️ hubs.li/Q032BcRK0 Alt: An infographic panel for the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on clinical obesity.

The FNIH Biomarkers Consortium’s Treatments Against RA and Effect on FDG PET-CT (TARGET Biomarker Study) project sought to evaluate the connection between rheumatoid arthritis therapies and cardiovascular disease risk. As the project comes to a close, Principal Investigators Drs. Dan Solomon and Joan Bathon reflect on how the project’s accomplishments have improved researchers’ ability to predict increases in CVD risk, and how that may lead to new treatments for both RA and CVD.
