The FNIH is supporting team research that has led to a better understanding of the underlying biology of Alzheimer’s disease and is now translating into innovative solutions for improving patient outcomes. FNIH partners Joel Braunstein, C2N Diagnostics, and Diane Stephenson and Klaus Romero, Critical Path Institute, reflected recently on both the outstanding progress in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and the challenges ahead. #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth

About us
The mission of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) is to foster public health through scientific discovery, translational research and the dissemination of research results through specially-configured, high-impact public-private partnerships consistent with the priorities of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The FNIH is not only involved in large, ambitious initiatives with potentially high impact on the lives of millions of the world’s citizens, but it also supports smaller focused programs in clinical training and ancillary support programs. The FNIH helps to underwrite biomedical initiatives that might not be attractive for private funding alone, or for one reason or another are not appropriate for wholly public funding. The FNIH may take on projects that are particularly risky in terms of the likelihood of success or where companies may be willing to forgo profits because of early stage nature of the program or in the case of some global health initiatives due to the charitable nature of the project. The FNIH's projects tend to be longer-term, operating on a time scale that can be unattractive for private investors. At the same time the foundation is capable of responding quickly and nimbly to funding needs that are immediate and pressing. With the goals of NIH as its guide, the FNIH serves both the public and private sectors, helping them achieve significant breakthroughs in human health in areas of interest that overlap with those of NIH. Learn about exciting advancements in virology research at the Norman P. Salzman Memorial Awards and Symposium on Dec. 5 at the Lipsett Auditorium in the NIH Clinical Center. Featured scientists will include Post-Baccalaureate Awardee Walker Symonds-Orr. His research explored how Enterovirus A71 tolerates genetic changes like insertions and deletions, especially in the capsid region. He found that the virus has limited flexibility for such changes, which affects its evolution. He also developed tools to label and study viral proteins, helping to better understand their roles during infection. Register now: https://lnkd.in/dbFusfUU

Learn about exciting advancements in virology research at the Norman P. Salzman Memorial Awards and Symposium on Dec. 5 at the Lipsett Auditorium in the NIH Clinical Center. Featured scientists will include Post-Doctoral Awardee Nagela Ghabdan Zanluqui, PhD, MS. Her research uncovered a new lymphoid structure in the dura mater, called the rostral-rhinal venolymphatic hub. Dr. Zanluqui showed that this structure helps the central nervous system fight off viruses by producing specialized antibodies. This discovery highlights how the brain has organized defenses at its borders to protect against infection. Register now: https://lnkd.in/dbFusfUU

We are excited to celebrate our 25th anniversary! We’re marking this milestone with a symposium that will focus on the potential impacts of moving from a disease-centric approach to health care to a “whole person” model. We welcome researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the general public to join us for the symposium in person or virtually. Please register to attend here! https://go.nih.gov/f2iU7Jn #WholePersonHealth This event is partially supported by the Foundation for the The National Institutes of Health with a generous gift from Bernard and Barbro Osher.

Big problems need big solutions. AMP AIM unites industry, academia, and patients to take on autoimmune diseases. Expanding on the success of its predecessor, AMP RA/SLE, AMP AIM tackles rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjögren’s disease, and psoriatic disease by identifying pathways of disease initiation, progression, and damage in these inflammatory autoimmune diseases.
