Improving Outcomes through Research-Based Innovations

About us

We provide onsite and distance-based training and support to service organizations, schools, and hospitals to optimize processes and outcomes for children and adolescents diagnosed with developmental disabilities who engage in severe problem behavior. Dr. Hanley formed FTF in early 2019 primarily to fulfill the demand for training in practical functional assessment (PFA) and skill-based treatment (SBT) procedures. The company aim is to provide highly effective training and reliable support to professionals attempting to adopt PFA/SBT processes in their practice and to organizations attempting to improve outcomes for the children and young adults they serve who engage in severe problem behavior. Severe Problem Behavior We are experts in assessing and treating severe problem behavior, and skilled in building capacity and confidence in others to do the same. Sleep Problems We build capacity in others to implement an efficient model of assessment and treatment of sleep problems within a three-step process. Stereotypy We are experts in designing effective teaching programs for humanely addressing stereotypy and building capacity in others to do the same. Eating Problems Our approach to assessing and treating eating problems is to provide a relaxed environment in which children are motivated to interact with and eventually eat new and nonpreferred foods. Balance We train organizations in the Balance Program, a home-based, parent- implemented, skill-based approach to preventing the development of severe problem behavior. Preschool Life Skills The Preschool Life Skills (PLS) program is a classroom-based approach to teaching critical social skills to preschoolers to prevent problem behavior from developing or reemerging.

  • Many traditional ABA methods lack robust evidence of their effectiveness. In contrast, innovative approaches backed by over 20 replications deliver socially validated outcomes. These procedures eliminate severe problem behaviors without crisis procedures or medications while helping children meet their IEP goals. It’s time for the ABA community to move past outdated methods and focus on evidence-based strategies that truly transform lives. This highlights a critical need in ABA to distinguish between *efficacy*— does it work in controlled conditions? —and *effectiveness*—does it work in real-world settings? Many widely used interventions show efficacy but lack evidence of effectiveness, leaving families and practitioners with treatments that may not sustain or generalize. Toward Compassionate and Effective Practices Ghaemmaghami et al. (2024) emphasize the need to focus on socially valid, trauma-sensitive, and sustainable interventions in their paper on Compassion in ABA. Too often, outdated methods fail to prioritize dignity, autonomy, and safety, leading to unnecessary suffering. Read about these compassionate approaches below. The Effectiveness of FCT Functional Communication Training (FCT) is a prime example. While research supports its efficacy in controlled settings, Ghaemmaghami et al. (2021) reveal that its application in natural contexts—across homes, schools, and communities—was rare. When FCT is used as the first step in Skill-Based Treatment, effectiveness has been repeatedly demonstrated See, for instance, Slaton et al (2024) or these presentations (success stories on PFA website). ABA must move beyond the past. In this episode of Behavioral Observations, Matt Cicoria engages in a critical conversation about the state of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with Greg Hanley from ( FTF Behavioral Consulting ), ( Action Behavior Centers - ABA Therapy for Autism ).  The debate isn’t just about terminology—whether it’s trauma-informed or compassionate practices—but about the real impact of the procedures we use. 🧠 Many traditional ABA methods lack robust evidence of their effectiveness. In contrast, innovative procedures backed by over 20 replications are producing socially validated outcomes. These approaches are eliminating severe problem behaviors without the use of crisis procedures or behavior-controlling medications while helping children achieve their IEP goals. 📊✨ Rather than getting caught up in semantics, the focus should be on adopting evidence-based practices that truly transform lives. It’s time for the ABA community to move beyond outdated methods and embrace strategies that demonstrate meaningful, long-term outcomes for children and families. 💡 🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://lnkd.in/g_qZyC95 #BehaviorAnalysis #ABA #CompassionateCare #TraumaInformed #EvidenceBasedPractice #BehavioralObservations #InnovationInABA #SocialImpact #Podcast #ChildDevelopment

Self-restraint reveals what we’ve ignored. In this episode of Behavioral Observations, Matt Cicoria interviews Greg Hanley from (FTF Behavioral Consulting ), ( Action Behavior Centers - ABA Therapy for Autism ) to explore the unique challenges and needs of children with tic-like self-injurious behaviors (SIB). Children with these behaviors often exhibit traits like low motor tone and a preference for specific protective equipment or restraint conditions. Unlike avoidance-driven behaviors, tic-related SIB appears involuntary, with children signaling their need for help through self-restraining or seeking physical comfort. Identifying the right equipment or restraint conditions can significantly reduce these behaviors and enhance their well-being. 🛡️ By paying attention to what the child is communicating—whether through their actions or preferences for specific support—practitioners can tailor interventions effectively. Adjusting equipment or providing comforting physical contact can make a profound difference in their quality of life. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/g_qZyC95  #BehavioralObservations #ChildBehavior #CompassionateCare #BehaviorAnalysis #TicDisorders #AutismSupport #BehaviorIntervention #Podcast #GregoryHanley #EvidenceBasedPractice

Compassion is action, not kindness. In this episode of Behavioral Observations, Matt Cicoria sits down with Greg Hanley from ( Action Behavior Centers - ABA Therapy for Autism), ( FTF Behavioral Consulting) to shed light on what compassionate ABA truly means. While the aim of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has always been to ease suffering and improve lives, there’s a growing acknowledgment that some procedures have lacked compassion, particularly when addressing severe problem behaviors. 🌟 Compassionate ABA isn’t just about being nice but about showing genuine concern for the learner in every moment. It’s about designing procedures that not only achieve goals but also align with the learner’s dignity and the needs of families and allied professionals. The field is evolving, offering better, more compassionate procedures today than even a few years ago. 💬 This shift emphasizes moving away from traditional practices to approaches that prioritize social validation and the learner’s immediate experience. It’s not just about teaching skills but ensuring those skills are taught in a way that fosters trust, understanding, and a sense of safety. 🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://lnkd.in/g_qZyC95 #BehavioralObservations #ABA #CompassionateCare #BehaviorAnalysis #DignityInABA #TherapeuticPractices #CompassionInAction #Podcast #ProfessionalGrowth
