If you asked an investment industry veteran they'd probably tell you the industry is shrinking... After all, passive indexation is putting pressure on traditional long only active management, single manager hedge fund launches are at all time lows, and a handful of big multi-manager pod shops continue to suck up assets and talent. But Brett Caughran, Founder of Fundamental Edge, explains that although all of these things are true, it actually equals more investing jobs, not less. It simply takes more headcount per $ of AUM to run a pod shop strategy than it does to run more traditional strategies with longer time horizons. For every dollar that leaves a long only or single manager for a pod shop, the headcount might double or triple. Couple that with the rise of family offices which definitionally don't close (they call it generational wealth for a reason) and suddenly the picture for fundamental investing jobs looks a lot more rosy.
