CONGRATS TO Naismith Hall of Fame Coach (2001), Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski!!!! Coach K was recently honored with the 2025 Naismith Outstanding Contributor to Men's Basketball Award. Mike Krzyzewski‘s contribution to the game of basketball is legendary and historic. His impact is not measured only in wins and losses but by the leaders whom he has developed both on and off the court. He does this not only by the intentional investment of his time and care, but also by holding himself with great discipline to serve as the type of leader others want to emulate. He also sees the leadership role as that of being a societal steward. Our center -The Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics- which bears his name, is proud to be front and center, to witness how his leadership-in-practice exceeds even his insightful writing and speaking about his leadership lessons. The Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics (COLE) is a premier academic center at the Fuqua School of Business that focuses on talent and knowledge development in the ethical leadership context. COLE’s mission is to empower leaders of consequence to change the world for the better. As a leadership laboratory, COLE brings cutting edge insights and fosters a learning culture that in turn, produces genuine and sustainable excellence. We draw insights from research and practice that are infused into our student experiences. Hence, we focus on mindset, skillset and identity of leadership of which collaboration and teamwork are key. Our philosophy is that “leadership without ethics has no heart and ethics without leadership has no legs.” COLE produces entrepreneurial leaders of exceptional character, ethically grounded and possessed of a global mindset. These leaders will inspire their followers to meet and exceed an organization’s goals through actions that are, at one and the same time, highly productive and highly ethical, while continuously serving the best interests of all the organization’s stakeholders. We call these remarkable individuals ‘Leaders of Consequence’. Fuqua/Duke is one of the leading institutions for developing leaders of consequence for businesses and the greater society through COLE’s co-curricular commitment to ethical leadership, and our range of programs for students, practitioners, and scholars. “Business, Leadership, and Managing Transitions On and Off the Court” was the focus of the Fireside Chat with Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski, as part of the 2024 IGNITE Speaker Series, convened by Jewish for Good. Coach K is the former Head Coach of Duke University's men’s basketball team and Professor of the Practice of Leadership at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business. Sharing a few takeaways from the session moderated by COLE Faculty Director, Sim Sitkin, Michael W. Krzyzewski University Distinguished Professor, at Duke's Fuqua School of Business: 🔷 It is important to recognize and actively encourage those you lead to fully utilize their abilities. Often even the most talented individual do not fully recognize how much they can do. One of the leader’s jobs is not only to recognize talent but to provide the encouragement for individuals to feel and use their abilities. “I believe in you” is one of the most powerful things a leader can convey. 🔷 If you have been able to surround yourself with a capable team, you still need to actively empower them so they feel validated in taking initiative. Then the leader needs to be disciplined enough to actually let others lead by stepping back and valuing them taking over as much as they are able to. 🔷 Leaders need to be lifelong learners. Often those with more or different experiences from yours provide an opportunity to learn. Speaking with groups is another opportunity to learn about their situation – both in preparing for speaking to them and in interaction with them. Leading those from different generations is yet another opportunity to learn and grow. As a leader, continuing to grow personally is essential to remain effective. 🔷 Big egos are good and not a problem so long as the ego is “not about me” being so special, but instead “is about us” being special. A strong ego doesn’t need stroking or to be the center of attention but can focus on others or the group as-a-whole. 🔷 As a leader you should always be looking for places where you can “give back” – to your team, to your organization, to your community. This includes giving of yourself and giving financially where possible. The Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics (COLE) continued its "Leaders REAL TALK Series" with an insightful session on resilience, featuring CeCe Morken (former CEO of Headspace and Mental Fitness Advocate) and Rear Admiral Milton "Jamie" Sands (Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command). This exclusive event for COLE Leadership MBA Fellows (CLFs), at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business, explored how leaders can cultivate grit and navigate adversity, both for themselves and their teams. Resilience is more than enduring hardship – it’s about thriving through it. CeCe and RADM Sands shared strategies to build resilience on both personal and organizational levels, emphasizing the importance of authenticity, mindfulness, and supporting others. Here are a few impactful takeaways: ⏺ Resilience takes time. Focus on being present and mindful in every interaction. ⏺ Vulnerability builds trust and strengthens team culture. When leaders are open, teams feel safe taking chances. ⏺ Routines matter. They bring balance, comfort, and structure in times of uncertainty. ⏺ "No" is a full sentence. Taking on too much can lead to burnout and set the wrong example for your team. ⏺ Support others by "lightening their invisible backpacks." Acknowledge their struggles and create a safe environment for authenticity. ⏺ Encourage a "learn it all" mindset rather than a "know it all" culture to foster growth and adaptability. This heartfelt conversation, guided by COLE Executive Director Sanyin Siang, challenged us to rethink how we approach resilience and the critical role leaders play in fostering it. Today on Veterans Day, we celebrate our veterans and active-duty U.S. military service men and women. Thank you for your resilience, courage and your stewardship of our democracy. Since its inception in 2004, The Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics (COLE) at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business, has had a history of engaging with and learning from military leaders. Through these relationships, COLE fosters a cross-exchange of leadership ideas and insights, and as a result, bridging civilian and military relationship. An example is our recent conversation with GEN (Ret) Martin E. Dempsey, 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and COLE Advisory Board Member Emeritus.
