“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a federal holiday in 1983 to commemorate the life and legacy of the heroic civil rights leader who championed justice, equality and progress. It stands as the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. This provides us with an opportunity to do community service and offers a moment for reflection—on the resolutions we made, the changes we pledged to embrace, and, perhaps most importantly, the roles we play within our communities. Today, we challenge our friends and neighbors, many of whom are spending today honoring Dr. King with their generous actions, to join us in amending New Year's resolutions to include a commitment to the many communities in which we each have roles. Ask yourself: What can I do within my means that would honor Dr. King’s legacy? Perhaps it’s dedicating time throughout the year to volunteering at your local library, women’s shelter, or soup kitchen. Maybe it’s offering a smile and saying “Good morning” to unfamiliar faces, holding the door for someone, or practicing patience when a fellow driver cuts you off. Your MLK Day pledge might involve picking up an unlikely book and committing time this year to learn about the challenges faced by marginalized groups, exploring ways to lend your voice, resources, or unique skillset to their cause. 2025 provides new opportunities to connect with those around us, speak to our neighbors, learn about their experiences, build relationships, be curious, be in service, and find new ways to support one another. In doing so, we can create stronger, more resilient communities. We ask you to sit with your reflections and allow yourself to be proud of the kindness you choose to champion daily and the ability to choose selflessness willingly. Engaging in intentional service reminds us that the power to make the world better exists within each of us. Every effort rooted in compassion has the potential to create a lasting impact worthy of legacy. Dr. King’s words ring as true today as ever: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Togetherness is power. Let’s lead with kindness, love, and a renewed commitment to the values that unite us. We have added links in the comments to information about MLK Day and volunteer opportunities in Bucks County, as well as verified resources to help our fellow citizens in California recover from the wildfires.
