Cement startup Furno Materials, Inc. was recently selected for a $20 million cost share award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to build a low-carbon, modular Portland cement plant in Chicago. The facility will use recycled industrial waste materials as feedstock to make Portland cement carbon neutral. At the center of the company’s research and development is UIC graduate Jai Mehta, who earned his master’s degree in 2018 and his PhD in mechanical engineering in 2022. We are excited to announce that Furno Materials has been selected for a $20M grant from the U.S. Department of Energy in partnership with Ozinga to accelerate the development of our first commercial plant - Project OZ - in Chicago, Illinois! Furno’s mission is to create a future where sustainable cement is accessible to everyone, everywhere. This funding reflects the capital efficiency of our technology, as we work towards building a 160 tons/day facility that demonstrates the power of standardized, decarbonized, and decentralized cement production. This project is a key milestone as we advance towards making decarbonized cement a reality in the U.S.—revitalizing communities and bringing jobs, innovation, and cleaner production back home.
